I am not sure how this is a debate but I think it could be fun either way.

Well, there is one fact that can not be denied.

A former NBA referee went to jail for consorting with known gamblers. Doesn't exactly prove that the NBA fixes games, but it damn sure doesn't look good for the league.

On a side note, and I can't believe I am defending that idiot but ....

it's amazing how much more shit Bud Selig caught for the steroid scandal as opposed to David Stern and his referee-turned-convicted-felon.

LOL yeah defending Bud does sound a tad out of place. course i'll bet any amount of money that "honest Dave" is sitting on a large pile of his own P.E.D cases and it just hasn't come out yet. never DID trust the guy. Stern's a crook imo...

Match fixing is about a lot of things. Mostly gambling but also for personal stats advancement*, team advantage either immediately** or later***. Both for playoff reasons and draft position.

If you scroll through this you will see that fixing matches is more than just for gambling purposes and in theory can include a number of different things.

Match fixing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

*A high school basketball player injured his leg 1 point shy of his schools all time scoring record. They arranged for him to shoot 2 free throws at the start of the game and so did the other team.
**This is the widespread thing we usually think about and plenty of examples will be given later.
***Colts come to mind about ensuring they have the worst record and #1 draft pick.
***Pop resting his starters while they were currently able to play. Anytime starters are rested.
***a badminton team threw a match for a better playoff seed in the olympics, they were ejected
***the Bobcats have been taking since Jordan came in as an attempt to gain draft picks.

NO WHERE AM I SAYING THAT THE NBA FIXES GAMES!!! OR THAT THEY FIX EVERY GAME!!!!

I am simply stating that games in fact get fixed and much more often than you would think.

If you take the time to read this:

Tim Donaghy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Sports gambling expert R. J. Bell, president of sports betting information site Pregame.com, tracked every game Donaghy worked from 2003 to 2007. He discovered that during the two seasons investigated by the NBA, the teams involved scored more points than expected by the Las Vegas sports books 57 percent of the time. In the previous two seasons, this only happened 44 percent of the time. According to Bell, the odds of such a discrepancy are 1 in 1,000, and there was "a 99.9 percent chance that these results would not have happened without an outside factor". He also found 10 straight games in 2007 in which Donaghy worked the game that the point spread moved 1.5 points or more before the tip—an indication that big money had been wagered on the game. The big money won every time—another indication that "something (was) going on". However, Bell suggested that there was no way anyone who wasn't in on the fix could have known that something was amiss about Donaghy's actions during a game; he said it would have been another year at the earliest before anyone could have caught on.[24]"

This part really sums it up:

"Handicapper Brandon Lang told ESPN that it is fairly easy for a crooked sports official to fix a game, despite Stern's insistence that Donaghy was a "rogue official". According to Lang, an official can directly influence the outcome of a game 75 percent of the time if he has money on the game. Lang also believed that a bookie connected to the mob turned Donaghy in to the FBI."

The NBA was completely unaware of his transgressions and the onnly reason he was caught was because some body ratted him out to the FBI who decided to investigate.

They definitely fix the draft lottery (there's video evidence showing them making Ewing go to NY), so it isn't much of a stretch at all to think they fix games.

Totally off topic here but the entire Tim Donaghy case was the final straw with me in regards to ESPN.

I had a subscription to ESPN The Magazine.

Tim Donaghy had been in jail a year and then was making claims that other refs were fixing games as well.

Stephen A. Smith then writes a column and accuses people of believing Donaghy because the vast majority of the NBA is black.

He then went on to say that people ignore scandals in football and baseball.

Nevermind the fact that baseball players were meeting with Congress in regards to the Mitchell Report.

Nevermind all the hell the NFL and the Patriots were catching over Spygate.

Not only was Stephen A. trolling via race baiting, he was totally and factually incorrect.

In fact, of the three scandals, the NBA caught the least amount of bad publicity.

Oh yeah. And the only guy who went to jail over the Donaghy Scandal...

was the white guy.

So, I decided if that is what ESPN is going to offer as far as sports journalism goes, I was done with them.

Cancelled my subscription and do not watch their programming ever since.

Okay, back on topic.

Don't ask Stern if the lottery is fixed or he will ask you if you have stopped beating your wife yet.
