A great but pretty lengthy read - Kudos to Nate Silver on a fine piece.

So the Canadian N.H.L. teams may suffer from a version of the problem that the Chicago Cubs faced during the “bleacher bum” years. Their fans are so loyal — happy enough to turn out for the spectacle and the beer even if the team stinks — that the franchises don’t have all that much incentive to put out a competitive product.
One item in my opinion missing from the piece though is that the Canadian teams have been poorly managed over the last 20 years (with the lone exception being the Senators). Canadian teams for the most part have drafted poorly and have made bad short-term decisions in free agency.
I thought it was because the NHL insists on keeping a team in Phoenix?![]()
Pretty sure that was left out intentionally. He's trying to do an analysis only of statistical factors, where that is obviously much more intangible.
Because that definitely plays into his assumption that, in any given year, each team has an equal chance of winning the Cup. Obviously coming into this season, no logical person would have said that Florida had as good of a chance of winning as Chicago or Pittsburgh.

To be fair, 4 out of the 7 Canadian teams made it to the PO's this year. That's a 57% success rate.
Compare that to the 52% of American teams, and you can see that the Canadian teams fared better than their American counterparts.
Shit happens is all, and the biggest problem was not one Canadian team could get past the 2nd Round. But don't blame the East, since they had 3 of the 4 teams representing Canada. I'm looking at you Windshield.

Do we count the Avs as a "Canadian Team" because the team that won the cup the first time was assembled in Canada with leftover parts from Eric Lindros?
I think they win a few cups even if they don't move.
Although Roy would never get traded from Montreal to Quebec, sooooo...
And the 94 Rangers were essentially the 90 Oilers.
Imagine the riots in Montreal if that had happened.
