1. Boom or bust for Bradford?

I see this as a make or break year. Bradford is guaranteed $1.75M next year but there’s $12.265 on top of that which isn’t guaranteed. If he doesn’t look like a $10M+ QB why pay him that money? It would make more sense to trade him for a minor pick or cut him loose. I don’t see him as a $10M+ QB and I don’t see him taking a pay cut. He’s not a complete bust but he’s a $6M QB and I think this is his last year with the Rams.

2. Young guns: Can the wideouts progress quickly?

I loved what Givens produced. I thought he was great in pre-season games last year, as was Pettis. I would have had them and Amendola as my #1, #2, & #3 for the start of last year if Pettis hadn’t been suspended. I have no idea what the team saw in Gibson and I saw even less from Quick. From what I’ve heard Bailey is a more natural WR who should be able to produce as a rookie. Austin is supposedly raw and could struggle. In my eyes Quick didn’t compete for jump balls or hustle back on an interception late last season. I questioned his heart for the game whilst on ESPN last year. I hope I’m wrong but I think he starts at #5, (or #6 with Cook playing slot WR). A good WR corps in 2014 is more realistic due to the current inexperience.

3. Who replaces Steven Jackson?

No-one. I like Richardson but I’m not convinced he’s durable. I liked the move for Stacy based on the comments of people who watched him play in college. Pead improved late on and should stick as a last resort RB. I don’t think our #3/change-up RB is on the team yet.

4. Will Schotty open it up?

I’m a fan. I thought he got the best possible out of a bad Jets offense in 2011 and people forget that we had 2 very different offenses in 2012. We started as a power-run team with Jackson off-tackle/outside with a FB behind Mulligan as a power TE. We changed to a single-back passing offense with Richardson as a smash inside RB, Kendricks at TE and 3 WRS. We also had some nice variations with 2 TEs on the same side and 2 WRs on the other.

5. What about Kendricks?

He doesn’t look like a sub 4.6 runner. He has questionable hands. He’s weak/mediocre as a run blocker and he doesn’t play hard when the ball isn’t coming his way. What he can do is pass block, (at TE or in the backfield), and act as an emergency outlet. That he lost the starting job to Mulligan says much about him. What’s missing from the conversation is not how much time he takes from Cook but whether he beats out McNeil. McNeil played every down as if his life depended on it last year. He’s the least naturally gifted TE you’ll see but he was the pick of our TEs in pre-season last year. He was injured early on so he didn’t get many opportunities. That the Rams wanted to re-sign him before he could become a FA says something about him. He’s the TE I’m pulling for in camp. He’ll probably look awful now and have me shaking my head. Lol. Bottom line – Kendricks is cheap as a #2 or #3 TE.

6. What’s my line?

The great unknown! Three guys have talent and injury concerns. The RG is overpaid and on the down slope. He’ll probably be cut. Pick 2 from 5 at OG. The good news is we have good depth at back-up. We’ll end up releasing 2 OL who will make other teams rosters as back-ups. That doesn’t disguise the prognosis that we’re a bottom 12 starting unit with health issues.

7. What can we expect on defense?

Good things. The core is the base defense, 1st reserve on DL, & the Nickle DB. The best 10 from last year’s 13 return along with a 1st and 3rd round pick. Most teams have 1 weak player. If you could choose you’d probably have it at S with a young aggressive player.

8. How much impact by Ogletree?

His speed, range, and coverage skills should improve our team...and soon! He’s small and indications are that he won’t play behind Quinn where his size could be exposed by a DE who too often takes himself out of the play. Opponents will obviously try to create alignments where he has to move that side. If Hayes plays like he did last year he could take Quinn’s job. That would give Ogletree more security & greater freedom. I think we'll see opponents line up with a WR & TE on Quinn's side with a RB motioning that way to draw Ogletree. The best WR will stay to their QB's right with a lone RB in the backfield.

9. Set at safety?

The obvious weak spot, especially in base. In multi WR sets we might be stronger with Johnson coming in. Both he and Finnegan might see some action at S.

10. Is this the year for the return game?

A weakness for 2+ years. We should have depth at receiver with Cook also playing slot so let Austin loose as a KR. I’d settle for someone safe at PR though.

Just the concerns and grumblings of an old fart. Don't take these comments too seriously or get upset.

Two TE's? I like it...It will be a whole new look for the formerly predictable Rams offense. I think the one thing that hampered Bradford last season was a far too predictable offense. Keep the defense guessing. GO RAMS!

1. Boom or bust for Bradford?

Boomer Sooner! Towards the last 8 games of the season, we all saw Bradford improve by leaps and bounds in the red zone. He's always been pretty good 20-20, but the red zone was his achilles heel. With another year in Shotty's system, red zone targets with Austin, Pettis, Cook and Quick, expect Bradford to put up 30 TD's this season. Even with our wideouts being a little on the green side, they are all talented enough to pose mismatches all over the field. Someone's going to be open and Sam will find them.

2. Young guns: Can the wideouts progress quickly?

I know many are very excited to see what Austin can do for our offense, but I'm looking forward to see how Chris Givens has improved from Year 1 to Year 2. He showed that he is Sam's favorite deep threat. Towards the end of the year, Givens was comfortable running short and intermediate routes as well. His ability to be an all-around receiver is going to give secondaries problems, which should open up the underneath stuff for Austin. The X-factor of the group is, (surprise, surprise) Brian Quick! He has all the measurables to be a dominant wideout in this league. Has he learned the playbook and worked on his timing and route running? Early reports are yes, but he's being out shined by Pettis, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. We may finally have a deep and talented receiving corps.

3. Who replaces Steven Jackson?

No one. Need I say more?

4. Will Schotty open it up?
Yes he will. He finally has the weapons to open up the playbook and call a more aggressive game. He's always been hindered by not having good personnel in NY and here. We did improve dramatically last season with essentially the same weapons. Him and Fisher have mentioned that they're going to speed up the tempo and be more spread out than last season.

5. What about Kendricks?

Kendricks, I feel, can be our Delanie Walker. We can line him up in the backfield to block for our running backs or flash to the outside on a flat route. He's improved tremendously as a blocking tight end, while still being able to be a receiving threat. Not bad for a #2 tight end.

6. What’s my line?

I think even if Long was to go down, the group showed some toughness and was vastly improved, thanks to Coach Boudreau. The key position is LG. Is it going to be Watkins, Smith, Jones or someone else? Considering we're not having SJax back, our run blocking is going to be critical to our success on offense. We need to keep defenses honest and not have them drop 8 guys back every time and dare us to throw.
7. What can we expect on defense?

Something special I hope. Brockers is going to be our best defensive linemen and one of the premiere DT's in the NFL. Long and Quinn will get double digit sacks. Can Janoris Jenkins make that leap to best cover corner in the NFL? He's spectacular when he gets his hands on the ball, hence the 2 or 3 turnovers he returned for touchdowns last year as a rookie. Our glaring weakness is safety, but if we get enough pressure up front, that can be masked.

8. How much impact by Ogletree?

It seems like he is picking up the playbook according to coaches, so that is great news. But he is a rookie and will have his growing pains. It just matters when those growing pains happen. Will it be during the first quarter where it won't hurt as much, or will he blow an assignment and we watch Kapernick scamper in for a touchdown late in a game?

9. Set at safety?

Yep. It's going to be Stewart and McDonald. I don't think Giordano or any of the others will supplant McDonald and Stewart, barring injuries of course. Stewart has shown he can do the job, but he needs to be consistent. McDonald, just like Ogletree, will have growing pains, but those usually are more painful considering he is playing 15-25 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Expect him to give up some big plays early on in the season, but hopefully he improves as the year goes on. I like him a lot, but I won't expect All-Pro play immediately.

10. Is this the year for the return game?

It could be. I'm just a little uncomfortable having Jenkins, Austin or Givens receiving considering special teams are the most dangerous plays in football. They're also our biggest playmakers in the return game, so Fisher we'll have to trust their judgement and hope no catastrophic injury happens to either of them.

We have many questions on the Offensive (Junkie will say excuses
lol2.gif
)

HA! I am open for this season. It's a new season. I'm just tired of hearing it like of few others on here. My take on the offense is this: If Brian Quick grows into a man and plays well, this WR core could be good. If not, I think Givens will be good, Pettis will be ok, and Tavon will have his flashes if he can take a hit.

I agree on the questions.

ON D my take is this: Can Ogletree play like a beast? If he does, this D will be really good as long as the safeties can contain.

That's my take as of 7/23/13

Hey Guys. I signed a one-year contract to teach Science and Math at a local private school here in Phoenix, AZ starting in August and guess who the new head football coach is?

None other than Jeff Rutledge!! How cool is that. Yep, the QB that played for the LA Rams back-in-the-day, got two rings as a player and coach with the Geeants (Giants) and Redskins is in the same school as me!! Too cool!!!

Looks like Rok Watkins just got waved. Jim Thomas just tweeted:

"Farewell to OG Rokevious Watkins, Rams 5th round pick in 2012 has been released by team. Sources say he reported well over his target weight"

Sure glad we traded that 2nd rounder to Chicago who then took Alshon Jeffrey for the Pead pick and Rok pick.

Congrats Retro on your new gig!

I am very disappointed in Rokevious! He was going to be on a short leash anyway since his only position seemed to be right guard and he was injured last year. We want linemen who can play multiple positions along the line!

Jeffrey and Quick might not have made a lot of sense.

I was kinda hoping Barrett Jones was going to beat him out at some point just for the sake of competition. All I know is that we have to have a Guard better than the one we had last year. Ojinawa or whatever his name was completely sucked and got beasted early and often against the Hawks, Bears and others.

Because you take Jeffrey instead of Quick, use the Quick pick on a safety or something else. So instead of Quick or the 34 overall pick, you go BPA with a need possibly, then take Jeffrey instead of Pead. Lamar Miller in the 3rd. Givens in the 4th.

Yep Rambunctious. That's the one. SJ you are right again. A complete screwy draft that is turning out to be a number of wasted picks. Your scenario would have slotted us two great talents as opposed to out-the-door stiffs. Watson just has been a declining disappointment. Chris Williams or Barrett Jones will be slotted for the left guard spot. Brandon Washington is also having a great camp.

Thanks RamCub. It'll be a bunch of fun and there is a chance of becoming an assistant coach or may be a strength coach for the kids.

Washington is another Hurricane I believe. Whatever the case I think we will be ok. Our strong links on the line will help the weakest link. In the past, there were weak links everywhere on the line.

That's right SJ. He is a Miami Hurricane that spent last season on the practice squad and is a big kid at 6'4, 320 lbs. He is as good as Chris Williams who is 6'5 320 lbs. So with Long at left tackle, Williams at left guard, Wells at center, Dahl at right guard, and Saffold at right tackle, we have a pretty good line. Then there is Barksdale, Nyseke, and either Washington and Saia as back-ups, Watson became expendable because of his attitue and commitment which is a between-the-ears problem. We will be O.K.

Hindsight is 20/20 although you had your eye on Jeffrey early on and as I recall, were pissed at the time when we made the trade and passed on Jeffrey. You never know how these things work out though, with Jeffrey gone it changes the pool at WR and who knows maybe Givens is gone in the 4th. I'm not sure anyone picks Quick before the 4th and as stated, it doesn't make sense to draft both Jeffrey and Quick.

But just so I got this right, are you ready to throw in the towel on Quick and Pead?

I'm just saying, our draft last year was fruitful IMO. Yes, as always, there were and still will be guys who will fall by the wayside and with as many picks as we have/had last year, this year and next and as depleted in talent as the team that Fisher and Snead took over, I completely understand some of the moves, like this ....

Let's not forget, we had something like 33 players out of the 53 man roster last year that were not on the 2011 roster and we still had a bunch of holes to fill this year.

Here are the rookies added last year...

Starters
Janoris Jenkins
Michel Brockers
Chris Givens

ST Starters
Johnny Hekker
Greg Zuerlein

Role Players (Guys who will see a lot of snaps this year and may improve in their Sophomore year)
Daryl Richardson
Isaiah Pead
Brian Quick

Backup Players
Turmaine Johnson
Austin Davis
Jabara Williams

(And I still left off a few who may make the final cut this year.. McLeod, Conrath, Daniels and Pointer)

Smh...Rok got waived?? hmm.. Welp I didn't expect to much from him anyway; I like the Guard/Center we picked up from Alabama, maybe he can slide into that position pretty soon and be a quality starter.

Not ready to throw in the towel on Quick and Pead at all. Were they picked too soon? Yes they were. Would I rather have Jeffrey and Lamar Miller instead? Hell yes I would. Hindsight is 20/20, but I was screaming for Jeffrey and Lamar and had Lamar going in the 2nd, but would have taken him in the 3rd all day.

Jeffrey
Miller
Givens
??

That's pretty bad ass

I totally agree SJ76. For all of the "developmental" time the Rams have given this guy, taking him in the second was ill-advised when we could have easily accumulated the exact players you've listed and still picked up quick in say the fourth.

I'm miffed like SJ76 is regarding Quick for a different reason. As I stated at the time - after day one and before day two of that draft - we had the golden opportunity of having the first pick in day two and should have traded down again - like we did in the first round - to pick up more picks! People were dying to get ahead of the Colts who picked next to grab Coby Fleener.

We got scared because the 49'ers took A. J. Jenkins at the end of the first round and we were also interested in him.

SJ - Did the Rams have Jeffrey in for a visit? I don't remember. Apparently he wasn't on our wish list.
