I used to post this thread annually over on CBS during the off-season. Some of the former CBS posters may remember. Seemed to always make for a pretty interesting topic.

Anyhow, the concept is pretty simple. How did your favorite team become your favorite team? For some, it's as simple as it's their alma mater, some were already fans, then it became their alma mater, family ties, etc.

For me, I was 9 years old and was in my 2nd season of Jr. All-American football. My dad was attending Long Beach St. at the time (they still had a football team back then) and he took me to a couple of games. It was fun, but it just didn't feel like "big time football" to me.

Then one day he told me he got tickets to see USC. Again, I was 9 and just learning about football so I was kind of expecting an experience not much different than Long Beach St. We went to the Coliseum and that alone was impressive to me because that was where the Rams (my favorite NFL team back then) played!!

Well, we're in our seats, the Coliseum is packed, the band starts playing "Fight On", the team runs out on the field and I immediately became a fan for life!!

When I was 4, I was raised in a half-way house, my parents were in the witness protection program. My dad got greedy, tried to move too many guns at once, and was fetched by the Feds...he was flipped into testifying against Raul "El Burro" Carmona the biggest gun smuggler the east of El Paso, Tx. Anyways, there we were, in this half-way house, when El Burro sent his notorious hitman, Sazo Melendez after us. He bought off some feds, and got our location.

Midnight, Sazo kills the two guards out front. He pries open the front steel door with a crowbar. He launches two grenades killing two more guards. Then he opens fire with his Ak-47, mincing everyone in the half-way house. Then, he grabbed a couple of gas containers, and set the half-way house on fire, like a roman candle. El Burro paid Sazo a rumored 500k for the hit. On his way home, Sazo stopped for a rare Omaha porterhouse steak. Sazo having been raised in the back country of Peru, did not have the best table manners, and would eat bigger chunks of meat, than he could chew. He choke to death on an Omaha porterhouse steak.

El Burro was on the run, his crime empire was falling apart. His ring of prostitution was crumbling at the seams. Seems he tried to set up shop in the Juarez Brothers territory. Bad idea hombre, the Juarez Brothers sent their own hitman, Pete Canela. Canela slighted El Burro's throat from ear to ear, then pulled his tongue out through the wound. It was the bloodiest battle the Mexican drug cartels had seen in ages.

On the day that Sazo tried to killed my family...we were not there, we were out enjoying a Nebraska Cornhuskers game. And that is why I am a fan.

(truth is, I was 9, moved to NY. My family was not into sports. I was looking for a college football team to cheer for. I saw a TV segment on ESPN on Tom Osborne and how close he had come to winning it all, but hadn't, and he had a bowl losing streak. They had an underdog feeling to them. Plus, I was a huge Ozzy Osbourne fan at that time, so it just seem right)

My dad was a huge Vols fan and most of my family also liked Tennessee...basically just born and raised that way. When I was 8 or 9, we moved to Murfreesboro, and my first football game was at MTSU (1999 vs UCF). So that's how I became a Vols & Blue Raiders fan. GBO! Go Blue!

Went to school there. First in my family to go there, so definitely not family ties.

Grandpa was a Golden Gloves boxer and he wrestled at OU, Dad went to school at OU. I didn't go to OU but Sooner football was drilled into me as a kid for obvious reasons. I had a scholarship to a different school.
