Old joke: two tribal members visit the witch doctor, complaining of stomach problems. When asked what they ate, they replied, "some missionaries". Asked how they were cooked, they replied, "We boiled them." Asked what they looked like, they replied, "They wore brown garments, with ropes for belts, and sandals, and they had funny haircuts."

"There's your problem", said the witch doctor. "You don't boil those kind, because they are Friars."

A Padre who had spent years showing a tribe of natives how to farm and build things to be self-sufficient gets the word that he is to return home. He realizes that the one thing he never taught the natives was how to speak English, so he takes the chief and starts walking in the forest.
He points to a tree and says to the chief, "This is a tree." The chief looks at the tree and grunts, "Tree." The Padre is pleased with the response.
They walk a little farther and the padre points to a rock and says, "This is a rock." Hearing this, the chief looks and grunts, "Rock." The padre is really getting enthusiastic about the results when he hears a rustling in the bushes. As he peeks over the top, he sees a couple in the midst of heavy sexual activity. The padre is really flustered and quickly says, "Riding a bike."
The chief looks at the couple briefly, pulls out his blow gun and kills them. The padre goes ballistic and yells at the chief that he has spent years teaching the tribe how to be civilized and kind to each other, so how could he just kill these people in cold blood that way?
The chief replied, "My bike!"

I'm following the Dodgers-Braves game. Pretty impressive the production that Chipper has put up in his later years.

You're not suggesting what I think you're suggesting, are you?

And while we are at it, Capuano has shaved 1.50 runs off of last year's ERA, and more than a whole run off of his career ERA. What gives?

You know when I started typing it, I wasn't even thinking about that. I was just really impressed with his batting average, OBP and slugging percentage compared to guys on our team and compared to washed-up players that are actually younger than him (Vlad, Damon, Hideki Matsui). Then when I was finishing the post, I knew it could be read that I was suggesting that he was on PEDs. I'm not, but I guess you can't be really sure about anyone, unfortunately.

I was thinking the same thing...

As for pitchers, do you REALLY want to start pointing fingers at pitchers who came out of nowhere to put up Ace-like numbers?

Do you?

Really?

That's one of the great tragedies about the Melky situation. All of a sudden, every marked improvement will be chalked up to PEDs. Or that's what will be whispered in chat rooms, message boards, and local adult beverage establishments. And perhaps even locker rooms?

Are you talking about Eric Hacker and his 100% quality start rate this season?

Is Melky the new poster-child?

Bigger than Manny? ARod? Giambi? Palmeiro?

Braun WOULD have been the poster-boy, but Buddy-Boy was not going to allow one of HIS boys to take that mantle...

I thought it was so obvious I did not have to mention his name...

Oh shit. That's two!! I knew he was not reaching 83 on the gun naturally.

I must rep you too often, that's too funny to go without reppage!

Like I said, the Melky thing could/will make every marked improvement in a player's performance suspicious. If you ain't cheating, you aren't trying. :mmph:

And it may not just be about HRs now. We aren't seeing the infamous headbloat anymore and no more 60 HR seasons, even 50 HR seasons are rare and there have only been 11 40 HR seasons since 2008! That's like the 70s and early 80s again. I mean Braun is the closest thing there is to the good ole steroid days and he's never hit more than 37.

So as other folks pointed out - its more about stamina and recovery time now. what do we look for .450 obps? .150-.250 increases in ops?

Leche is the poster-child because he's the most recent. That he is a Giant doesn't help the Giants' rep, first with Teh Lord, then with Alfonzo (former Giant), then Mota, now Leche. Wasn't there a Giants' minor leaguer who got banned for the stuff as well?

Don't forget Benito, Benard, FP, Estalella, Herges, Matt Williams :faint: at least The Thrill never did! Nuschler says No! Can you imagine though? No nope I'm not imagining, stop it.

And just to even it out, fuck all the other hundreds of guys who weren't Giants who did it too, no way are we the poster team for roids. I'd go with Oakland first if I had to, but it's pretty evident it was like syphilis in The 1500s.

Or the opposite - pitchers who were pretty damn impressive, then new testing is put in place and they decline sharply ...
