Montee Ball Assaulted

At 2:15 this morning, five thugs decided that it was a good idea to jump the star Badger running back on University Avenue right outside his apartment building. Montee wound up getting repeatedly kicked and suffered minor head injuries. According to police, Ball did not know his attackers.

That said, the circumstances of the case are sort of weird. Incidents like this are very rare in Madison, and it is downright bizarre that this happened on one of the few Madison streets that is actually busy that time of night. Also, if you are going to pick a vulnerable target, a muscular running back is not the person you would have in mind. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they specifically targeted Montee for whatever reason.

1. They were trying to rob him, and didn't realize that a running back isn't the best option.
2. A rival school hired them.
3. James White (our backup running back) hired them.
4. He slept with one of their ladies.
5. He slept with one of their dudes.
6. He didn't pay his drug dealer/bookie/library fees and this was a warning.
7. Racism. True, all 5 attackers were also black, but maybe they are like the blind KKK guy from the Chapelle skit.
8. Ball or his attackers or both had too much to drink and started mouthing off.
9. He beat their high score on the Frogger arcade machine in the union.
10. Three words: ALIEN MIND CONTROL
11. He asked Bielema if it was okay to try and go 2-0 this year.

A witness said that they appeared to target him, and were screaming "Fuck UW Football" after they beat him up.

At this point, it does look like a group of individuals who hate our football team and decided that jumping a drunk Montee Ball was the best way to take out their frustrations.

You forgot the Men in Black scenario. Montee Ball is really an alien in control of a cyborg human body,

and the 5 guys who jumped him are really aliens from a species he is at war with....

Let's just say when I was in college, they a "no caps, no jerseys" dress code to try to keep a certain element of the local non-student population away. Guess it's not working.

My friends never went there so I never really experienced it myself. I know what you mean though, over on the corner University and Lake. I don't know where Montee lives but I guess this happened right outside his apartment. I don't think there has been a real detailed report yet. I've heard in the past though that the local thugs don't really like it when out of town Badger players get all kinds of love and hype in the area...sad to say but particularly if they happen to be the same color as them. Because you know, it's "their" town. I'm about ready to go through Allied Drive with a tank.

In all seriousness, if it was an unprovoked assault, I do feel bad for him. I do hope he's 100% when the season comes around. As far as I know, he hasn't done anything stupid that would be harmful to UW.

He's a pretty upbeat, friendly guy, to be honest. Madison's thug community is small, but once in a while they go pretty far out of their way to be assholes. I really doubt that Montee did anything in particular to provoke this.

The attack happened at University and Frances (after Montee had just left SS Brats). Montee lives in the Equinox building (Gorham, which University turns into, and Broom). Segredo is at the corner of University and Lake. In other words, they are all on the same road about three blocks apart from one another.

Information is sort of muddled on the incident, but it sounds like Montee was definitely targeted, and that they said "one player down, nine to go." Based on everything i've seen, it looks like somebody on the football team pissed off the perps. As a response, they targeted football players and Montee was the one slightly separated from the group.

With all the video cameras around there, they will find the perps on video. They ran right past Ian's, Dotty's, and the Nitty Gritty. All of those places have cameras. We'll get our answers eventually.

The problem with the football team is that some dudes just can't handle being around them. They feel like they have to prove themselves. I'm surprised more fights don't happen, honestly. Remember when Booker Stanley got kicked off the team for letting that Denim Dan super hero goad him into a fight during Miflin back in like 2004 or 5? I would have hit the guy, too, and I probably wouldn't have lost my job over it or anything.

Yahoo is quoting Madison PD as saying that they believe there was a fight last week involving football players, but Ball wasn't involved.

Hopefully it was just some idiot redshirts that wouldn't have played anyway.
