Nice article Simmons...buuuuuut:
"NHL's American hotbeds (Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Los Angeles, etc.)"

Sorry, there's something amiss in this sentence. LA is still up in the air and this lockout will hurt their cause.

Yeah, I had the same thought when I read that sentence. I thought LA is not and likely never will be a "hotbed" of hockey. I'm not sure Chicago is either.

When I think of LA and hockey, I think of one thing - "It's not even so much me as it's Roenick - HE's good."

Good for Clowe.

It would have been really nice to come home and watch a hockey game tonight. These guys are pissing me off.

Fuck 'em, I'm going to make a trip to the city and catch a Bulls game anyway. NHL isn't the only hockey around.

I agree Slim, i just picked up some tickets to see RMU/Ohio State Dec 9th.

Great. As long as its a Fehr deal. I mean fair deal. As long as what is happening here is not what happened in baseball years ago when a few rich owners backed Fehr and created that system of haves and have nots. If that happens I am done with the NHL. The article reads as if the 50/50 split is still the goal. If so, good.

Considering that all the deals proposed by Fehr are still a step back (for the players) from the current deal, I don't really think that's a possibility.

But I have to wonder if by just going with Fehr, regardless of what he's brought to the table (IMO he's been very reasonable to the league) it has led to this stalemate. Maybe the owners viewed hiring Fehr as an aggressive move by the PA, and their egos forced them into playing hardball. I think they believed they could win the PR battle, get the players to crack, and pat themselve on the back. Instead, we've seen the PA pretty united, and actually the owners and Bettman seem like the greedy, unreasonable ones - a reverse from the last lockout. I wonder if, as this thing drags on, the owners are starting to wonder whether this was really worth it - why mess with a good thing?

All this new CBA needed was some tinkering, instead it's become a full blown mess. For what?

There's your problem.

I definitely got into the NBA during the last lockout - but that was when Nash and the Suns were playing one of the most exciting brands of bball since the Magic-led Lakers. Haven't been able to get back into it this time around.

Comeds wants more of a Habs and Habs not system. ;)

lol - The real reason I tuned is is that the Raps were playing the Celts and I'm a Celtics fan. When I saw the Celts were up by 20 early in the 4th quarter and the Raps were tossing up brick after brick, I changed the channel.

They were joking on the radio that with the way the Wizards are playing and the Caps not playing, we may not see a home team win at the Verizon Center until 2013.

Other leagues may not have the same talent level as the NHL but they are much cheaper and they are still a lot of fun.

I don't mind my money supporting those players at all. I do mind my money supporting the current set of NHLPA and NHL management. (At least for the next season or two).

Don't know if this was already posted, but GO IAN WHITE!!!

"I gotta be honest: I personally think he's an idiot. Since he's come in, I think he's done nothing but damage the game. The whole process has just been frustrating... I think, just where we stand now, you'd think that we're close to making a deal if they're willing to come a little bit our way. It's something that could have been done even in the summer. So it's frustrating. There's just absolutely no need to be missing games and doing this kind of damage."

Interesting - Owners putting pressure on Bettman?

Dreger: NHL, NHLPA intend to resume talks on Monday

I'm sure that even if the owners thought stepping away from the table for a bit might be beneficial (to either their position or reaching an agreement), that what Bettman said was detrimental to the PR war and the players/union pounced on it.

Some nice spin in that article by the NHL.

reminds me of the "focus group" leak.

question on there was "Would 50/50 be viewed as fair?"
- next day an offer approaching 50/50 was suddenly on the table.

this time, after bettman proposes to waste more time,
fans collectively face-palm, and word of a heavyweight owner starting to get tired of it.
- all of a sudden talks are back on.

Yeah. Funny how it works like that. Backlash and all of a sudden they are ready to entre negotiations again.

BTW, I have a feeling Bettman is toast. Does anyone agree? This has gotten a lot of publicity and to much is "leaking" out on how many people in high places feel that Gary boy has fucked this up.

The bottom line is both parties will be displeased with the new CBA, and both parties will continue to make gobs of money. So why is there a lockout?
