From the clips of the rough at Oakmont I've seen, even just hacking it out of some of that will be a challenge.

I know they don't want -20 to win the US Open but this layout and setup are ridiculous. I like watching them struggle like we do occasionally too, but not all day for 4 days. This course just holds no appeal for me. I wouldn't ever want to play it and it just isn't much fun watching them try to.

one of the guys playing the Great Assed Barmaid course yesterday had a bag he won in some drawing one of the THREE TIMES he played Oakmont CC (all with monied member clients... all pretty miserable experiences, so he says... lol).

the Open? absolutely loving it. so refreshing, so inspiring to see golf gods hacking out of 9-inch nails... turning 12' putts into 30' chips... ya gotta love those crazy undulating square greens... fucking RAVINES in the middle of the fairway?... awesome silliness... loved it when an enraged Sir Rory smashed his driver on the tee marker (seems like such poor behavior should get at least a reprimand, no?)

Most Golf events are held on courses that you dream of someday getting on... Oakmont seems more the opulent nightmare.

So it’s basically hit the fairway or add a stroke… or two?

Yep, and some of those greens are scary, easy to run off and end up with an incredibly hard shot to get back on.
Well, if it's making the best players in the world lose their minds, it must be a bitch..

That’s for sure. Of the top 5 leaderboard in Rd 4, 3 are under par, one with -3. For perspective, Scottie is at +4. Mind blowing!

You see Rory destroy that tee box marker yesterday?

I can agree that seeing them struggle is fun. Maybe this course is made to see if Pros can make par. That is even more exciting.

That and you better be able to read those enormous greens. Today, I've seen so many putts just miss within the last 3 inches.
This is a tough Open, only Merion holds the high ground on toughness but it's not over.

Watching 2D golf on TV, there's just no way to fully appreciate the slope and undulations of those greens.

You're right. Normal tv will show the slopes ( and you can actually see the ball spin from the pin faster than normal) TV can somewhat show you that the green has slack slopes and plateaus that are surrounded by ridges but unless you've actually seen the course you're still left blind.
They are the largest greens and there's a reason for that, false euphoria.

I have a USGA HDCP of 8 and I average 28 putts in a round ( that helps my HDCP ) but watching this makes me shiver thinking about putting on it. Of course some of the pin positions are crazy too

lol... yep... crazy... the whole damn place is loopy - despite its traditions and fame, it's pretty far down on my 1,000 courses bucket list. Closest thing I've ever seen to Oakmont's 220ksq' rectangular wave machine is Thistle Dhu (those 120' practice putts - oof.)
