Selfishly it's going to be nice to have another section of DC that will be modern and vibrant. I took my son to a couple of 20 somethings bars outside of Nats Park last year. Can't believe how different that area is. In the 90s, that was an area you avoided at all costs.

Yep, the environs around the old RFK could use some $$$ no doubt.

Sad reality of big development is the impact it will likely have up front for the poor/low income families currently ekeing out an existence in the area now. Wish there was some way to concurrently aid these folks in someway - cuz you know big biz land grabs will be in a frenzy

Exactly....that's why I said selfishly. Hopefully they will be able to meet them halfway somehow.

Unlikely - greed knows no bounds and we well know how power corrupts

You know people could simply say that taxpayer dollars should go to another use rather then building a luxury stadium. Is that selfish? Or is it looking out for taxpayers? I will certainly concede. That this stadium the public financing is way lower then others ( 25%) however 800 mil is 800 mil

Now add to it that the common folk are priced out of seating and I would say exactly who is being selfish ?

I would like to see it worked out perhaps by govt loan ?

I was the only one in this thread to use that word. Don't double down. Just admit you misread my post.
No it wasn’t meant or directed at you

DC city council is in a pickle. They now operate the land. They have to spend that money either way to develop the land, stadium or no. Harris is covering the cost of the stadium, and with PSLs for the Bills going between $15k and $60k per seat, that’s going to be how part of that is funded.

As a current club level season ticket holder, my wife and I are out. We’re both upper middle class alone, so we have plenty of purchasing power. We also have a 29 game Orioles plan. But we’re going to be out on the PSLs. What will happen is that many of the PSLs are going to be bought by companies and folks trying to turn it into a “take your client and firm” to the game. The current club level folks like us will be pushed out to the lower and upper levels, if we return at all. This really hurts your blue collar fans, and we’re going to have a really whitewashed experience at the new stadium, where the visiting fans once again outnumber actual Washington fans.

I don't think they would have had the stadium announcement if they weren't pretty sure they could get the votes. I don't think the NFL draft I would be coming in 2027 if they were not pretty sure. The could have had the draft between the casino and National Harbor if it was going to be in Maryland. Of course they could not have had one million people. :D

Goodell doesn't show unless it's done.

The reason Fernando Valenzuala became a Dodger is an interesting story. They moved from Brooklyn to the Chevez Ravez region of LA where they built the stadium. This displaced thousands of Mexican Americans so the latin community of LA, which is obviously huge, rejected the Dodgers.

Walter O'Malley knew he needed a Mexican player to appeal to that fanbase. They sent scouts to look at a shorstop who didn't pan out but they saw this lefthanded fat kid striking out everyone on another field.

Washington Post

As Commanders won on the field, support for the team’s name soared

According to a Washington Post-Schar School poll, half of all D.C.-area adults now ‘like’ or ‘love’ the team’s name, up from 34 percent a year ago.

According to a Washington Post-Schar School poll, 61 percent of D.C.-area sports fans are fans of the Commanders, up from 45 percent of area sports fans a year ago. Among all D.C.-area residents, 53 percent say they are Commanders fans, while 45 percent do not root for the team. In 2023, 31 percent of D.C.-area residents said they were Commanders fans or that the Commanders were their favorite local team.

What’s more: Half of all D.C.-area adults now “like” or “love” the team’s name, which was changed in 2022 and became a hot-button issue for many fans who either clamored for a return to the franchise’s previous name, Redskins, or sought an alternative. In 2024, only 34 percent liked or loved the new name.

About a third of area residents do not like the name (36 percent), with 9 percent saying they “hate” it.

Harris made it clear in February, however, that the team will stick with Commanders.

“I think it’s now being embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff,” he said. “And so we’re going with that.”

Team merchandise sales through retail giant Fanatics from April 1, 2024, through the end of March were up 163 percent, according to a team spokesperson, and Daniels’s jersey ended the regular season as the site’s top-selling NFL jersey.

“It’s cool. It’s catchy,” said Kady Wilson, a D.C. resident and Commanders fan. “I like it better than the Redskins.”
