They've slowed it down a lot in recent years. Teams still have just ten minutes to decide what they want to do though. I wouldn't mind them slowing it down even more for the first round. I personally like it when they give teams time to decide whether to make a pick or make a trade. What do you think?

Actually, it hasn't slowed down, it's speeded up.

IIRC when the draft started on Saturday, it was 15 minutes per pick for the 1st round.

Ugh. I forgot. They should get at least 30 minutes per pick in the 1st round. Maybe 15 minutes for the 2nd round. Ten minutes for everything after that.

Dude, your ideas are pretty much the worst. So, now instead of waiting 90 minutes for the bears to pick, I’ll have to wait 270 minutes? How about no.

How does a team decide what to do if their target player gets taken? Would 10 minutes be enough time for you to negotiate a trade?

Yeah. Because that’s how much they give you. Adapt or die. Every team that doesn’t have contingent plans in place by the time their pick rolls around doesn’t deserve to be good. They should know exactly who they will call for trades the second they are on the clock.

Are you an champion auctioneer or something? Can I have an autograph?

Seriously though...having trades already set means that you have to reveal your hand...which is not particularly good strategy.

They get the offseason to scout and make their big board(s). There is no reason they need 30 mins

No, you approach other teams with the trades. And other teams are ready to listen. I’m sure the haggling is minimal.

So they spend all year looking at every eligible player and building a draft board according to their scouts rankings and the fits within their schemes and you think they aren't prepared for a guy getting taken right before them in the 1st round?

and even during the draft trades... most are not surprises, the team who had the OTC knows which teams to speak to, and the trades are already mostly hashed out...

It depends a lot on whether there are surprises. If neither the Titans or Browns take Cam Ward, for example, there might be a LOT going on for the Giants, too much for ten minutes to be enough.

Make it 20 minutes but give teams an incentive to go fast, like maybe let teams pick which international games they want to play from their slate of opponents (or not go at all if that's available), and they get to decide in order of who used the least time on the draft clock.

Not how it works though. Most teams call every team ahead of them and behind them to get trade parameters or at least values those teams would expect in a trade already somewhat set up. So it isn't 10 minutes and make as many phone calls as you can. It is we already know what teams are offering and whether we would want to trade back or up when the time comes.

I know they asked the Broncos GM about this last week. He said he spent the entire week talking to almost every other GM in the NFL about trades and that the week of the draft is about figuring out which trade scenarios are actually serious or not. So 10 minutes is plenty to get the work done that is needed. I think the other big thing is the NFL would lose so much viewership if they made the picks 30 minutes long. It would be unwatchable.

I think the timing is just right. They’ve extended the draft into a whole weekend.

You simply can't do that in the TV/Internet era. You would kill the broadcast with that and all the advertising revenue involved.

The Giants would need 20 minutes to decide to pick Ward? It would be more like 30 seconds.
