Great question but I am not sure they would since it is a common number. Look at Gordie Howes #9. Gretzky's 99 was easy since it was an odd number given to a player traditionally.

Not to discount what he has done but no. What Gretzky has done was amazing with the goals and points and will be near impossible for anyone to break the point record.

To put the Point record in perspective.
If McDavid plays 1487 games at his current point per game pace, he will come up roughly 600 points short of Gretzky.
