Another odd move. What was the point of waiting three games into the season to do this? Did they expect Bart to do something amazing enough while sitting on the bench to have another team suddenly clamor to trade for him?
3 days into the season, all teams have locked in their rosters. Harder to add him to a 40 now than it would have been 4 days ago.

He may still be claimed. But there is a better chance he will sneak through today than he would have 4 days ago.

Who EVER considered Bart “can’t miss”? The ‘18 draft was thought to be, AT THE TIME, a very weak draft. Mize was the somewhat consensus first pick (and he is hardly lighting the world on fire himself), but there were about 8-12 players in consideration for the #2 pick. And none of the other top picks in the draft have stood out as a superstar either.

It sucks to miss on a #2 overall. But there was no getting around that in that draft.

While true, it should still be pointed out that 17 players drafted between picks 3 and 43 of that draft have a higher WAR than Bart.

But you do t find anyone with more than 10 career WAR until pick 24 (Nico Hoerner of the Cubs). And in the first round, only 15 of 43 total picks have a career WAR over 1.0.

This was a historically bad draft. No getting around that.

You really can’t blame anyone except Bart on his career. He had Posey to guide him, you would think that would help him. Some make it some don’t.
Yup. But few ever have a career that would be worthy of a #2 overall. Even #2 overalls more often than not fail to live up to that level of expectation.

That makes me wonder, how many guys, on average, even get to put together a 10 year career in the big leagues, per draft.

Not the question you asked, but I was looking at HOF by draft position, and there was only 1 HOFer ever drafted #2 overall (Reggie). Verlander will certainly join him, and Thrill has an outside chance to be honored by the vet committee eventually.

It was my original thought but considering that so few get into the HOF I expanded it to merely 10 year careers (because that is the point where players can even get their names on the ballot). It should still be a short list.

I don’t have easy access to service time by draft position, but…

Historically, there have been 84 #2 picks. JD Drew, Travis Lee and Pete Broberg did not sign

Of those who signed, there have been 24 players with 10.0 WAR or more; 15 players with 20.0 WAR or more; 8 players with 30.0 or more. The 3 best #2s ever (by WAR) are Will Clark (56.5), Reggie Jackson (74.0) and Justin Verlander (80.9, active).
