While I'm not really fan of the IST, it did turn out to be a little more fun than I thought. At least the players seemed to care, so it made for better games.

Don't care for the idea of guaranteeing the winner a playoff spot though. The playoffs are the reward for a season long grind. Not a 2 week run in December.

Yes, but what are the odds of an absolute dogshit team winning the cup though? They'd have to go a worst 6-1 during that stretch against far better teams.

I don't exactly see this years Pistons, Wizards or Spurs winning their group and then three consecutive games. All three of those teams went 0-4 FYI

The heat didnt steal a spot from anyone. That's the difference here. They had the 7th best record in the east and was closer to the 5 seed than 9/10 seed. By opening this door to award a team outside of the top 10 because they had a cool 7 game run in november is absurd. 7 games out of 82 is nothing. Give these losers another draft pick or something

You also need to take into consideration the former 7th team now being reduced to 1 home game and the 8th going from 2 cracks to getting to a win or go home

All because of something that happened in the first few weeks of the season....not cool

Why do countries like San Marino or Gibraltar even bother playing FIFA World Cup qualification matches when we all know there is no way in hell they will ever win it?

Offer more money. That’s a better incentive. It’s early enough in the year that anybody who isn’t tanking has the belief that they’re a top 10 seed. You aren’t enticing tankers with a playoff spot. They are trying to avoid it.

Because that’s the max they can accomplish. International soccer doesn’t have a draft or a salary cap or other measures to try and create equal levels for competition.

But you’re deflecting from the point. Why does this change the math on a team’s motivation to play? I don’t get it. By your own words, you have all these teams in the first 20 games of the season believing they’re a playoff team anyway. Shit, in the NBA, if you’re close to being in or out, usually you’d rather be out. The 7-8 seed Heat that can go to a Finals is the anomaly and not the rule. I have an alternative. First, let’s get rid of this stupidity and announce the Lakers as the in season tourney champions from now on. After that, everyone knows the players really don’t make any extra money for making the playoffs. They are supposed to want to go as far as they can because they like to compete. All of the crazy money now days is taking away from that. Let’s incentivize making the playoffs, and up it every round.
