Scherzer seems to be having issues with fastball control today...

That’s not something you or anyone else will have to worry about. Even if Max continues at his 4.00 ERA pace or even gets slightly worse, and even if Eovaldi, Dunning, and Montgomery clearly outperform him, there is no way Andrew Heaney and Jon Gray will be consistently good enough to knock him down to 6th best (and I say that as probably a bigger fan of Heaney than most here).
Even if it did happen, having your fifth best rotation member with an ERA hovering around 4.00 isn't bad at all. And who knows if all six will ever be healthy at the same time, anyway.

Very good point, especially the healthy part. I mean, it’s obvious that our bullpen is our worst performing group and needs fixing for sure. But the health factor is why I never got upset that we kept adding starters, both in free agency and at the deadline. The argument over which 5 are our best and who goes to the pen might (but hopefully not) become a moot point if injuries pop up.

I was actually a little worried about today’s game being the trap game of the series just due to 1st start jitters/new ballpark and team effect possibly playing a role, as well as Toussaint being a sneaky good pitcher from time to time.

Good recovery by Max after a rocky start. It turned out to be a pretty good Scherzday afternoon.

Scherzer settled in and threw a quality start. Now up to the bullpen.

Yep! As Uncle Siggy pointed out, he didn’t have his best fastball control today, but he made it work.

I actually think his final stat line ended up fairly close to what we can expect moving forward- 6 or 7 innings pitched, 2 or 3 runs allowed, 8 to 10 K’s, mostly wins or no-decisions with a few losses sprinkled in.

Someone teach Ezequiel Duran how to hit a breaking pitch, or at the very least give him some of Jobu’s rum.

Dare I say that Mitch Garver has been looking a little better lately. Average is up, driving in a few runs, hitting a HR here and there, mostly solid at-bats.

Each team's biggest question after the Trade Deadline

Rangers: Should they have gotten another bat?
As general manager Chris Young says, you can never have too much pitching. The Rangers' only Trade Deadline acquisitions were two starting pitchers, a reliever and a defense-first catcher. That will no doubt revamp the banged-up pitching staff, but amid a battle with the Astros in the AL West, did they need another bat for the stretch run? Will the DH rotation of Mitch Garver, Robbie Grossman and Brad Miller be enough to keep Texas afloat? Young said at the Deadline that he’s confident with the depth and versatility of the lineup as it stands. That’ll be put to the test down the stretch. -- Kennedi Landry
