Kinda sad that in 45 years of team history, we've only had 10 instances in which a catcher had 15 or more home runs in a season. But, Raleigh could turn out to be the most prolific homerun hitter among catchers, in Mariner history.

Man, I miss Dan Wilson... wish we had him now.

Highly underrated catcher.. I think his health kept him from being a more notable name.

I agree with you, but on the other hand with how they try to limit catcher's workloads, it does make it more difficult for a catcher to put up big HR numbers as opposed to other positions.

Raleigh actually leads the majors in HRs for catchers with just 15 right now.

I would say the same about Kelenic but his batting average is the weight of your average runway model.
Kelenic isn't going to make it here. Maybe a change of scenery will help him, but it isn't going to happen here. He'll get traded this winter. It will be interesting to see what Dipoto gets for him.

Doubt he will be traded this off-season now with Toro getting sent down over him. This deadline was his highest level of a trade chip since pre his first call up.

Agreed. Limited workload and playing the most injury-prone position on the diamond, other than pitcher.

I've watched every one of Kelenic's ABs so closely, and I can see why scouts fell in love with him and why he has been shit. When he makes good contact, he absolutely obliterates the ball, but as a hitter that's all that you can say about him that's good. Facing major league pitching he can't hit breaking balls, works himself into bad counts, when he gets a good count he swings at garbage, I can go on and on.

What I have noticed of late is he just jumps on first pitch to keep from striking out. At least that is my guess on it. That is not a good place to be.

His approach at the plate is like he's playing a video game. He'll swing at everything, thinking he'll make contact, or he'll swing at nothing, thinking he'll get on base. Then when he gets into a hitters pitch, he'll swing at anything.

It's frustrating. I really want him to do well because he was so well regarded, but man, I don't see it happening. If he was getting out by hitting hard balls, I'd have hope. But he hasn't done anything that gives me any hope.

Yep. I also noticed that he still tries to pull every pitch even with an open stance. If he would step into an outside pitch and drive it the opposite way, he might get a hit now and then.

He's still a long shot to catch and pass Zunino's team high of 25 in 2017. With a lot of minor league call-ups in September, he'll face some vulnerable pitching.

He has decent pitch recognition and swings at as many strikes as your avg MLB hitter. He knows the zone well. But rarely gets himself into good 'hitters counts' where he can box up the pitcher and sit on 1 certain pitch in a small area of the zone and then just explode on the pitch if it comes.

The fault in his swing is that the moment his weight transfers to his front leg and then immediately his hips start to rotate which is the norm for all good hitters, Cal's problem is he does not keep his front shoulder in and square with the plate where he can cover the outside pitch. This trait is much more prominent when he is batting lefty vs righty for some reason. Resulting in nearly all his hard hit balls to dead pull right field when he is batting left. His righty stance swing is not his natural side, so he is not loading up his swing like when he is batting lefty.

All in all I will take what we are getting with a 1st year catcher. He has proven he will work on and modify his skill set even during the season ( look at his improvement at the plate after the 1st 7 weeks of the season ). And he appears to be getting the ball to 2nd quicker on steal attempts.

He is far more speedy a baserunner than your avg MLB catcher ( obvious attributed to his youth ). he has worked with Logan Gilbert for a few years in the minors so he has a lock on the position moving forward. He will be the M's primary catcher for the next few years barring injury.

I will glady take Cal behind the dish moving forward and focus on 2 things: 1. a .300 hitter at 2nd with reasonable pop to hit 15 or so bombs and 2. a legit DH who can bat .275 with 30 bombs and drive in close to 100 rbi ( very reasonable considering how the table can be set with our top 1-2-3 in the lineup )

1. Easier said than done. There are only two players like that: Andres Gimenez and Jeff McNeil. Brendan Rogers might get there but he is also getting inflated stats playing half his games in Coors. McNeil and Rogers might be available. I doubt if Gimenez will be.
2. Sign Josh Bell to play first base and move France to full-time DH. I love Ty France for his bat, but he is probably the shortest first baseman in the entire majors.

Gonna need a right fielder if Haniger walks. I don't want to go into next year hoping that either Kyle Lewis or Jarred Kelenic can hit well enough to hold down RF. Doesn't have to be a great player. Just someone that won't give us negative WAR while he holds RF for whichever of Lewis or Kelenic gets good enough to take it.
