It wasn't that much money, the player's age was right, and it was a sure fill to a need. I get that FZ is the one who calls the shots and he obviously knows what's he's doing but I think of this as a miss.
I guess you, I, and FZ can disagree as to what constitutes "much money," but nine figures isn't insignificant.

Looks like one of the more patient hitters I’ve ever seen. Third lowest swing rate in the MLB and swinging at just 8.4% of pitches outside the strike zone. That’s incredible tbh.

another thought: maybe we DID offer him similar money but he really just wanted to be in Chicago. I think I read that Yu Darvish counseled him to go to the Cubs.

LOL it's the barest minimum you can pay 9 figures, over 5 years, for a guy in his prime. The money should not have been the problem. Again, Dodgers.

Certainly possible. Then offer $23 mil per. Again, Dodgers.

woulda made me a little queasy, but yeah. I think I would have. However, I completely understand that FZ didn't want to. End of the day: I trust FZ.

Also, lets see how he's doing at the ASB when the league has a book on him.
There will be film on him soon, probably.

Certainly possible. And just because the kid is Japanese does not mean he doesnt want to experience more of an American culture than the closest team to his homeland. He is an individual, after all.

And maybe Darvish just didn’t want him in the NLW…

To be technical, including what the Cubbies paid to his Japanese team, it was a 5/95, not a 5/100. So he was paid almost the most possible for an 8 figure deal, not the minimum for a 9 figure deal…

I don't think the money was the "problem." Again, we don't know what Suzuki wanted to come to SF. Maybe a bit more than Chi, or he just didn't want to come here. We're assuming we could have gotten him. We don't know that to be the case. But, as has been said -- that kind of money is usually reserved for an All-Star/fringe All-Star player. Maybe he is that. You think so. I guess we'll see.

Just hypothetically, what if he wanted $30M per to come up off the Cubs? Two issues with that --1. the money and 2. the desire to be in Chicago.

We just don't know what he wanted and if we were a fit for him.

Just stating my disappointment, $20 mil/year would be a steal for this guy. IMO $23 mil/year would be too. Obviously can't know exactly why he's not a Giant but I would have liked to see it and my answer to cal's question is definitely yes I wanted him at that price.

Just my 2 cents here ... conversions like this are very jaded IMHO. As a fan I would have taken him at 20m or 23m or even 25m That’s because I thought he would be a great fit. I also can't lose sight of what Otari did. I also can't lose sight of the damn Dodgers either. I just wanted him in SF.
But, if he turns out to be just an OK assest .. not an issue for me the fan. It's not my money. But its a hefty investment for the team itself. Both financially and direction moving forward ...

LOL you're not gonna convince me I was wrong to want him because I wasn't
I have been pleasantly surprised by his production so far and the Cubs in general, I did not expect to be above .500 at this point in the early season.

Eat me, Suzuki-stealer! :D

Actually I thought about it, a big factor for him was probably hitter friendly Wrigley vs pitcher's park PacBell (it will always be PacBell to me)

He was probably also guaranteed a non-platoon. The Giants don’t play non-platoons (essentially)

Baggs today:

“They (the Giants) were in his final four and presented extremely well,” Wolfe (Suzuki's agent) said via text message. “Our next step was to fly to San Francisco, see the city, then go meet Farhan (Zaidi) and (Gabe Kapler) in Arizona. But the Cubs were always one of the top preferred choices, and after the meeting, he wanted to go visit Chicago.”

Giants President Farhan Zaidi was the first executive to call when Suzuki’s free agency opened for business. The Giants were among the teams that made an elaborate Zoom presentation to Suzuki in November, just days before the lockout. They weren’t sure where they stood or what kind of impression they made. But as the process ramped back up following the end of the lockout on March 12 and Suzuki traveled to the U.S., there were enough signals to lead them to believe that San Francisco wouldn’t be his top choice.

There wasn’t an opportunity to counter the Cubs’ offer, and it probably wouldn’t have mattered.
