I honestly just had to look up if Datsyuk was even playing this season, since I hadn't really heard his name recently. Now Datsyuk is a great player and all, but Giroux is exhibiting skills that make you one of those special players and he's only 23 which means he's going to get better. It's a great time to be a Flyers fan with all the young talent we have developing, but Giroux is starting to make that jump to superstar level and the best part is he just shrugs it off and keeps having fun.

You must spend too much time on the Flyer's board.

I haven't been seeing as much espn lately or even finding the time to really jump on here so that may be why. I have Zetterberg on one of my fantasy teams and since he was shitting the bed I guess I just assumed Datsyuk was out.

I don't really watch ESPN, but that's cool if they've been covering hockey. It seemed like it used to just be football.

Zetterberg had a horrendous start to the season on the second line but has been picking his play up as of late. Datsyuk started slow but has been a monster the last month or so.

I won't even put Crosby as the best in the game any more. He simply hasn't played enough in the last 12 months. I have little doubt that if he comes back healthy he'll be vying for that moniker in short order.

The best overall forwards right now (meaning this year), IMO, are:

1. Toews
2. Giroux
3. Malkin
4. Datsyuk
5. H. Sedin
6. Hossa
7. Backstrom
8. D. Sedin
9. Stamkos
10. Spezza

All of those guys can take over a game on the offensive end and bring other important attributes to the ice.

oh god damnit, i forgot toews too.. he might push giroux to 3rd :(

Datsyuk and Zetts aren't on the same line so don't bother extrapolating one statline for another. Yes, they're on the PP together, but, Dats is on a different 5-on-5 scoring line than Zetts.

And we should all temper expectations when not even one-half of the season is done. Yes, I know Giroux had a great second half and playoffs last year, but, let's see how he does down the stretch as "the man" in Philly.
Lots of players over the years have gotten off to a really fast start only to lose pace in the scoring race when the playoff stretch drive tightened up. Olli Jokinen, Marion Hossa, Thomas Vanek, Anze Kopitar - just some names in the past decade that were at the top of the leaderboard in scoring before Xmas hit that you had to scroll WAY down to find at the end of the season.
Not saying Giroux (and Kessel/Lupul, and the Panthers top line, and a few others) will fall down in the scoring race down the stretch, but a half season is just that, a half season.

He's not exactly the Flash, but he still has some gas left. I left him signing with you guys was probably for the best. You needed a veteran right now and the Penguins needed the room to groom some of the younger guys. It just sucks seeing him six (maybe more) times this year.

ha ya i believe it.. but my point was just that i think his value is in teaching the younger guys.. you can just see the differences in some of their games.. his production is secondary to me

I feel like Giroux has more staying power at the top of the leaderboard than everyone else in the Nhl right now. Call me a homer or what have you, but he's averaging 1.48 points per game and minus Malkin, no other active player is even close. So, at this rate, it's between Giroux and Malkin for the Art Ross. They're both scorching hot right now too. It may come down to who stays healthier. God only knows how big of a point lead G would have right now if he hadn't missed four games and change. Possibly double digits.

Malkin missed a good number too, though he wasn't playing that well at that time.

Trust me Disney hasn't changed. Well in one way they have. It's all about Tebow & the NBA now. Nothing else matters. Fortunately we all have a remote.

That's true. I almost mentioned it...lol Yes, Giroux was on fire when he went out and it apparently didn't cool him off any either. I wouldn't be surprised to see him sitting at 50+ points right now had he not missed any time.

It'll be a shame if he loses the Art Ross by just a couple points, but I have a feeling he's going to win it regardless. It's a big deal to me because no Flyer has ever won the Art Ross and Giroux is playing with Jagr, who has won it five times, so it would be like a passing of the torch from one elite superstar to another.

I'm a little too young for the Bobby Clarke era, but in the time that I'm been following the league, I've never seen a player with the potential that Giroux has in a Flyers jersey - including Lindros. If Giroux has another season like this next year, then I'd feel comfortable putting his name up with the superstars that define this era. Stamkos is another guy with the same opportunity.

Really? I think people are only remembering Lindros after the concussions and towards the end of his Flyers career and career in general. Lindros was DOMINANT for a couple of years. His PPG were only bested by Gretzky and Lemieux if memory serves me correctly.

His first couple seasons in the league the guys was an absolute monster. Just because he was an immature ass off the ice and had a soft mellon doesn't mean he didn't have a chitload of potential when he first started.

Lindros was a beast, and that Legion of Doom line, when healthy, couldn't be stopped even in the hooking/holding/clutching/grabbing/waterskiing era. Too bad Philly was kind of like the Vancouver Canucks - no goaltending to speak of after their Finals run, Hextall and R. Brodeur respectively.

The reason that I say that is because he played during the time of Lemieux's and the later half of Gretzky's era. He just isn't one of the first names that come to mind. It's meant as more of a compliment to Giroux than a slight against Lindros. The game is a little more competitive now than it was then. I remember someone citing yesterday the lack of repeat scoring champions. Performing at that level in this era comes with a different set of expectations.

I wouldn't count those those 'Nuck netminders out just yet. ;)
