nobody wants that. all those guys were lousy picks and we all knew it when they happened. what i had HOPED for was a top, experienced and proven winner. a guy who knows how to motivate a team before going out on the field! we never got that. i'm just tired of beating up a bunch of nobodies to average teams and then getting shellacked at the end of the year. always hoping a new, better coach can change that.
kelly's 1-7 (most were blowouts and that one win coming against a decimated team) record against top 5 teams is not my idea of a good coach.
sure, who wouldn't to see a return to the teams of parseghian, montana, the better holtz teams, but who is that guy? meyer was there and left, was unsuccessful. they tried to get him back and he passed. holtz also complained about recruiting and had his own struggles. talent seems to be more of an issue.

can you think of a coach whose team was consistently top ten, that was fired for not winning the big one?

it's not just 'the big one'. it's ALL the big ones! and no, i'm not privy to the inner workings of the games community and i don't care about who was or wasn't fired. i'm just a fan. just like you, only i expect more.

that's the issue. would coaching have made the difference, and if so who. there's an old saying, you can't teach speed. when you've got 6'2" running backs hurdling defenders 5 feet in the air, without breaking stride, it's a scary site. sure don't want to go back to the weiss/davis/willingham, etc era. lou holtz was struggling toward the end of his nd career, and even a devout catholic like urban meyer chose to go to the football factories where he could recruit freely, instead of notre dame. just doesn't seem prudent firing a coach who's keeping his team consistently top ten, but not winning the national championship.

all that said the team did look a little flat the last 2 games of the year. nd seemed to be turning the mo against bama then book was picked which killed it. can't remember the last time i saw him throw a pick like that.
I was so pissed watching that throw it was like what the hell are you seeing the guy was completely covered. Just run the ball a few yards and keep possession of the ball.

I think guy that could have the motivational end would be Fitzgerald of Northwestern I just don't know that you are getting him out of his current position. I'm also not sure about his recruiting but it would easier at Notre Dame than Northwestern.

he was an all-american at Northwestern. I can’t see him leaving for any other team. I think he has his dream job. (Unless he decides he wants to take a shot at a National Championship).

and this is why i hate kelly. his thinking lags behind everyone else's. drew pine should have started the second quarter (if not the game) yet he sits while coan plays like ... well, coan.

oh ... and fuck all of you who don't think i have a right to post my opinions!

see what happened there? he (finally) puts pine in who promptly moves the team some 40 yards. then what? the fucking dumbass coach pulls him for a worse q-back who immediately loses a yard then puts pine back in. WTF! the result is they have to turn it over on downs.

they deserved this loss today. coan gives away our first score and the momentum is gone. played the wrong q-back for half the game and you can't do that against a good team like cincinnati.
chalk this loss up to stupid coaching.

I like Pine starting from this point out, especially with this O line.

pine looks like the guy going forward, but it's not surprise coan got the start. he's been efficient, and has way more experience. it would have been a tough spot for a freshman qb to get his first start. nd's other two qb's threw picks in the first half, but they were also under heavy pressure. credit cincy's defense.

kelly made the adjustment and gave pine the whole second half. pine got them close, but an nd receiver dropped a crucial pass and nd's defense couldn't stop cincy in the final 4th quarter drive.

pine is a soph i believe.
and coan at 60% (ranked 70th) isn't very efficient imo. plus he can't move at all and has the sacks (20 in less than 5 games) to prove it! all he has is experience but that's hardly what should determine who's better or who should be starting.
it was clear to me last week pyne is a take charge and bring it on kinda player .. something neither coan or buchner have.
i think had pyne started we would have had a different result.

espn says he's a freshman. not sure if he's a red shirt. but he's essentially still a freshman. still playing an unbeaten top ten team, not a good spot to start someone with limited playing time, when your starter is 3-0, and a senior with much more experience. if kelly had started pyne and lost, the media would be roasting him, and it may even set pyne back.

not sure what coan's passer rating tells us at this point, but nd is 3-0, and coan has completed 60% of his passes and had only thrown one pick prior to this game. my eyes tell me he doesn't commit many turnovers and is an accurate passer.

Career: Has played in 25 games with 18 starts at quarterback … has completed 68.0% of his passes for 3,278 yards, 23 touchdowns and 8 interceptions … enters senior season ranked 13th in passing yards (3,278), 3rd in completion percentage (68.0%) and 3rd in pass efficiency rating (144.7) all-time at Wisconsin … has scored 4 rushing touchdowns … owns 12-6 record as starter (8-3 Big Ten)

pyne looks like an ian book type, a gamer. hard to simulate a situation like today in practice. buchner's only a freshman and played well against toledo. 6'2" can pass and run, i wouldn't discount him at this point.

if i were going tp question kelly's strategy, i'd question why he put the freshman buchner in the game so early and deep in nd territory. nd's only down 7-0 at the time. kelly goes to the freshman, cincy pressures him, he throws a pic, boom, 14-0, nd then fumbles the kickoff, 17-0. a 10 point turnaround. buchner has potential but just not a good spot for him to come in and have him throwing over the middle.

not nearly! but that was one fantastic comeback yesterday.
even looked like montana to clark on one score. nd was very fortunate to get the w.

bechner has some talent, but is an interception machine at this point. 3 picks, all ending in td's for the other team over the last 2 games.
