A good article that explains the trade exception and where Boston is at with them:

"Boston has actually generated three trade exceptions this offseason for Hayward, Enes Kanter ($5 million), and Vincent Poirier ($2.5 million). The Hayward exception could be valued somewhere between $27.9 million to $32.4 million depending on the structure of his contract."

the Kanter one has value.

the frenchy one is probsbly worthless. Not many guys you will be able to get fir so little. Maybe a ring chasing vet if a team loses a star to a blown acl and loses contender status.

The trade exception has been officially placed at $28.5M. It's largest exception in NBA history.

It's expected that the Celtics will hold on to it until the trade deadline.

Watch out..........................................rumors are that Danny is already starting to work this deal because beal told the Wizards that he wants out.

It’s no secret Boston Celtics All-Star small forward Jayson Tatum is among the league’s top talents after his performance in the NBA restart hosted at Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Wide World of Sports complex this fall.

But the Duke product wants to get even better this coming season, and he has been putting in plenty of work behind the scenes this offseason with his longtime trainer Drew Hanlen of “Pure Sweat” fame.

After his first All-NBA season, Tatum has little room for improvement as a recognized top-15 player in the league. But if the St. Louis, Missouri, native is really serious about sticking around for his whole career to hang banners, this is exactly what he needs to be doing in the off season.

Whether you are overstuffed with turkey and need a break from the rough NFL fare being broadcast on the holiday, or just miss the NBA and Boston Celtics basketball, check out the video embedded above.

There’s even a little footage of fellow St. Louisan (and perhaps future teammate?) Bradley Beal.

Because they signed Thompson to the midi level they can't go over 138,000,000 I believe so getting Beal would require trading more than a few spare contracts.

I've seen a couple of articles that brandish the possibilities... here is one of the better ones that basically breaks it down by price tiers:

Wallet Busters

Otto Porter ($28.5 million), DeMar DeRozan ($27.7 million), Nikola Vucevic ($26 million), Buddy Hield ($24.9 million), LaMarcus Aldridge ($24 million), Draymond Green ($22.2 million), and Harrison Barnes ($22.2 million)

The Price is Right?

Gary Harris ($19.2 million), Aaron Gordon ($18.1 million), Clint Capela ($18 million), Evan Fournier ($17.2 million), Eric Gordon ($16.9 million), Rudy Gay ($14.5 million), Dejounte Murray ($14.3 million), Will Barton ($13.7 million).

Bargain Hunting

Thad Young ($13.6 million), Terrence Ross ($13.5 million), JJ Redick ($13 million), Justise Winslow ($13 million), Larry Nance ($11.7 million), George Hill ($9.6 million), P.J. Tucker ($8 million).

---------

A lot of possibilities... some definitely better than others.

I completely agree on Barton...

... Nance? Meh. Just not the position or player fit that we need... we got hustle guys like him.

Another scoring wing is what we need most.

I think the Celtics have 3 big needs
1) wing scorer
2) stretch 4
3) backup pg (I worry Teague is toast)

barton and nance cover the first 2. And frankly nance can switch and guard multiple positions. He’d even play some 5

There's talk that Danny might bring back Aron Baynes with the $5M exception. I can't see any reason to do that.

The trade exception acquired in the Gordon Hayward deal could prove to be bigger for them than adding Myles Turner would have been. If the Bucks are vulnerable, Boston could improve themselves in a big way at the deadline en route to a finals appearance...

Acquiring Bradley Beal will cost a hell of a lot more than a trade exception and you would surely end up matching salary in the process.

What you need to be looking at is bad contract players like Kevin Love who you could acquire without really giving up any on court talent.

Nance is very similar to what we already have in Grant Williams.

And Teague played reasonably well last year... he still dishes out assists at a high level (and has a good assist vs turnover ratio), especially for a back-up PG. Teague should flourish in a Brad Stevens, Pick n Roll heavy offense (where players like Teague always seem to flourish).

If we're talking about one need to fill... what we need most... it's a veteran, reliable scorer/shooter off the bench.

you can add draft picks to a trade exception. What you cannot do is attach other players for salary matching.

it’s almost always picks and/or draft rights for a player.

I believe, but not 100% sure they could trade their recent first round picks in a deal with their TPE until they sign. In which case they become salary that cannot be attached.

yes. They need shooting.

hopefully Brad drag some good minutes out of Teague.

I just really like the nance fit. But he is similar to grant. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need more help there. They need spacing.

He'd be a great pickup for the C's. A bad contract who would actually make them better with his shooting and rebounding.

I'm a hard no on Kevin Love... for multiple reasons:
  • His contract sucks. Dude is making around 30 million per over the next 3 seasons.
  • He isn't mobile enough on defense... we prefer/need our wings and even our bigs to switch and cover multiple positions... old man slow doesn't do that, especially at his most natural position (the 4).

You can not add players but you could trade players in a another deal, which would have to be done if they traded for any of the larger contract players that approach the full TPE of 28.5 million for this season. I think they could use it after the season is over because they then wouldn't be hard capped but I could be wrong about that. I think the idea of getting one of the bigger contract guys that I've seen listed is a pipe dream.

they can add the draft rights to players. I've seen teams trade foreign stashes with trade exceptions.

I think guys who are not signed but you own rights to are able to be traded.

That sounds right but if they aren't under contract they aren't counting against the cap so the salary matching wouldn't work. They would have to move salaries in a separate trade to the team if they go over 20 million.
