''Everybody Was in Shock''
Alex Ovechkin talks about the firing of Bruce Boudreau and playing for Capitals legend Dale Hunter.

you practically quit on him. If all of a sudden you find your game I will feel sorry for the person that you are as a pro athlete.

yes I know he doesnt give a fuck about what I think... its just a common thing to say I suppose but the guy is lacking some serious character. This is a reason why he will always be in Crosby's shadow

What did you really expect him to say? That Bruce was a pain in the ass and his angry coach schtick got old and he was losing the team?

I think that if Alex throws him under the bus he gets way more critisisim than if he acts like it was a surprise.

You could say that he should take responsiblity for the teams performance but what if the above was true? Should he say that even if it was a lie?

In OV's defense some other captain said something similar in Feb. '09...

'I don't know if I saw it coming,' Crosby said today, 'but there are high expectations for our team. Unfortunately, coaches usually ... someone pays the price for that.'

Therrien was not well-liked by most of his players, and some undoubtedly are delighted that he is gone. Crosby, though, declined to criticize him.

'We came within two wins of the Stanley Cup (last spring),' he said. 'There's no doubt he was a tough coach, but I still respect him, for sure.'

He added that, while the Penguins have a new coach, it's the players'responsibility to generate enough victories to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

'When things go bad, that's the way it goes,' Crosby said. 'The coach usually suffers. It's still up to us. We're the ones who play. We have to find a way to win games.'

This one was pretty much lose-lose.

If he says he saw it coming people will be pissed and if he feigns surprise people are pissed.

His best bet would have been to pretend he was just at the dentist and couldn't talk. Or maybe pretend to have forgotten all of his English.

PC is the way to go. "Unfortunatley we have not played to expectations and a major change was needed, its unfortunate but its hockey"

I can't really blame the Caps for being disillusioned with Bruce. He said do A, so they did, didn't work. He said do B, so they did, didn't work. OV's been pretty selfless and did things outside his comfort zone all last year. At some point, when it's not working, you get frustrated and aren't sure what to do. I know I've played on teams like that. You don't quit. But you lose confidence in the idea that following someone is going to get you where you want to go.

To be honest, I'm a little shocked and I wouldn't be surprised if he really is. While it looked like a change might be necessary, it's looked like that before and McPhee has stood by BB time and again.

Or tell them he was too busy filming Happy Gilmore 2 to comment.

I think that is exactly what his 'I'm surprised' comment was. I am the opposite, I would like to hear the truth. If the guy was losing the team I want to hear about it but I know that's not what hockey players do. Their humility is refreshing in pro sports but their lack of personality can get boring.

It's ok to call people out and say contraversial things once in a while and not just give the respectful nice guy canned response. (This is in general and not really just about AO)

Yeah, good points. (looks for WW) To be fair, OV is usually more off the cuff than most, which gives me less pause to doubt his veracity.
