The Utter Disgrace of the Mookie Betts Trade

This sums up my view of this deal pretty nicely...

This trade is a disgrace for the Red Sox and for the league. I don’t understand why the owner of such a prestigious ball club—a de facto public institution—would charge his baseball operations department with ridding the team of a once-in-a-generation player when he could keep that player and continue to rake in unspendable profits. It’s such a mind-bogglingly greedy and self-defeating move that I resent being made to try to understand it.

i'm not broken up over this trade. i love verdugo, and his left hitting potential in fenway. graterol may turn into a solid reliever/closer. he has the stuff. clears price away, which i wanted. money and him, gone. good move. sox clear a ton of money. hey, mookie will be a FA. maybe he comes back here after all somehow?

stranger things have happened.

What To Know About Reported New Red Sox Alex Verdugo, Brusdar Graterol

Given his MLB experience, there’s a good chance Verdugo slots right in as an everyday player for the Red Sox as soon as this season. According to Statcast, Verdugo does rank higher as a defender than Andrew Benintendi in most categories, though their sprint speeds are about the same. Still though, it seems most likely the Red Sox would try Verdugo in right field and keep Benintendi in left field. Verdugo is arbitration eligible in 2022 and will hit free agency in 2025. Graterol has far less big league experience, but in the same Baseball Prospectus ranking that had Verdugo at 19th in MLB, Graterol was listed at 33rd. The Venezuelan righty has just 11 MLB appearances under his belt (one of which was in the American League Division Series), all last season. He went 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA for the Twins out of the bullpen. That’s a pretty small sample size to base an opinion off of, so here are some more concrete details. He boasts an electric sinker that tops out at 101 mph and sits at 99, and he uses that pitch 67.4 percent of the time, according to FanGraphs. He mostly uses his slider otherwise, with the occasional changeup mixed in.

That’s melodramatic nonsense.

He’s looking at the trade as if it occurred in a vacuum. It didn’t. The problem is the Red Sox gave Dombrowski the reins, and he did what Dombrowski does. He handed out a handful of shit contacts and emptied the farm system, effectively crippling the team for the near future.

Even with dumping Price’s absolutely atrocious contract, the Red Sox opening day payroll still is about $180MM, ranking 5th in MLB.

Get this, in 2020, Price will be the highest paid player on the Dodgers. Teams can’t go around making a host of dumb moves and expect not to pay for them (unless we’re talking about the Yankees). Yesterday, it was time for the Red Sox to pay.

also, fuck the author for crying foul when the precious Red Sox can’t afford to keep their star player. As a fan that has watched his team trade away countless stars, including back to back Cy Young winners (Sabathia and Lee), and is now about to trade away Lindor, I say the author of that shit article can suck my balls.

FTR, the author is a Phillies fan.

The problem with the deal is that the Red Sox are SUPPOSED to be one of the rich teams. And they just gave up arguably the 2nd best player in baseball and a pitcher who is still effective when healthy, granted which isn't all that often, for a solid middle of the lineup type player and a pitching prospect that projects to be a reliever.

From a PR perspective I can tell you that the vast majority of Red Sox nation would have preferred to see the Sox lose him in FA next year rather than make this deal.

The Indians are in a similar boat but don't have the financial resources of the Red Sox.

The Red Sox could have unloaded Price. Eat half his contract and plenty of teams would have been willing to take him on.

Now what to they do? Their farm system got Dombrowski'd. They have some very good young talent that will run out of team options pretty quickly. And the Red Sox got demonstrably worse next year with little to no reason to believe they could be a serious playoff contender.

Pros: Don't have to face Mookie Betts anymore.

Cons: Don't get to face David Price anymore.

"a disgrace for the Red Sox and the league". lol. I picture the author of that shuffling around his mansion in his robe and slippers asking his housekeeper what happened to his favorite bow tie. Yes, I picture him wearing a bow tie, or possibly an ascot.

Yeah Price has been a very solid pitcher overall but you know how there are some guys you just hate to bet against in a big game? Price is a guy I have bet against in many big games and it seems like I haven't regretted it that often.
Plus you're right, being a lefty in Fenway Price is probably not going to miss all those times when Judge, Stanton, etc. come rolling into town.

Lolz at suggesting David Price and his contract are an asset.

What a shit post.

Yep, glad the Indians didn't do that with Lindor yet but don't worry...it will happen soon :L

Yeah that sucks too. Hopefully the Indians will get more for Lindor since they won't be trying to simply dump salary like the Red Sox did.

Where the hell did I do that?
Right here:
pitcher who is still effective when healthy, granted which isn't all that often,

They didn’t “give up” Price, they dished him and his shit contract off on the Dodgers. That is pretty clearly the main piece the Red Sox got from the deal.

i think the move had more to do with getting price off the books than anything. i also think the sox will be in play to sign mookie after next year, and will have gotten verdugo out of the deal (and they can move benintendi then). also got a potential closer. so, in theory, they could have upgraded the OF, the pen, and still get mookie back. bloom, if anything, is very creative. i think hes looking a year from now.

Oh great, he's a Phillies fan.

But who are you considering good young talent that will run out of options pretty quickly? Devers and Boegarts are locked up for a few years. Benintendi still has 3 years and he's not exactly a superstar anyway. I guess They might have to give Eduardo Rodriguez a raise soon to keep him but the rest of the starters are veterans.
The more I look at their roster, this might be a good year for them to punt and regroup.
