I guess I just don't get why Tkachuk can't make that hit if we're going to still allow hitting in hockey.

i don’t see that first hit as a legal one (contacting the head,a charge, no intent to play the puck). They still allow fighting in the league too. If tkachuk doesn’t want to defend himself so be it. They both should have been looking at suspensions imo

How’s there no intent to play the puck? He has possession. And again, his ass hit Kassian’s head. This isn’t an upper body hit to the head.

And I’m not buying the whole “winger coming down to hit behind the goal line” stuff either - since when are we restricting where guys can defend?

If they wanted to give him a charge, fine, but everything beyond that being a reaction to a missed call by the officials? Dumb, and it cost them two points to a rival in a tight race.

I think Tkachuk's hit was one close but probably legal. It WAS 100% dirty though, IMO. A winger coming down from his point to hit a guy circling the net is out for blood. He knows the player will likely be vulnerable and not ready to defend himself.

This hit is legal but in my view it's predatory.

As noted above, it's NOT illegal but I don't think there's much doubt it was done with the intent to hurt. In that light I could see how some would call for disciplinary action. I can't justify it myself but I think it's a sneaky, dirty play. I don't think it had much to do with defending. It was kind of a charge, too, in that he took more than two hard strides with the intent to make a hit violently.

You used to be able to block from anywhere and any angle in the NFL too. Obviously that was changed, with penalties for blocks in the back, crack back blocks, clips, etc.. Not saying they should but the NHL might explore something like that. It's a dangerous play.

The thing I worry about is retribution not on Tkachuk, but on guys like Gaudreau, Monahan, and Lindholm. Tkachuk is likely not going to change his game (maybe he'll change the type of checks he puts on opponents), but he's always going to get under the skin of opponents.

On another subject, here's a clean hit from last night and lo and behold, there was no fight as a result.

Somewhat disinterested take.

Both hits were cheap ass and both were charges. Both very similar. Tkachuk sees Kassian behind the net, puck in play, and engaged with another Flame. He immediately makes a beeline full speed to hit Kassian when he was not expecting it. Seemed like there was a little Lambeau leap into Kassian tbh.

No idea why Kassian is suspended though. Because he ragdolled Tkachuk? I dont like a result where one player takes runs at another player and when called to answer, he turtles. And the aggrieved player is suspended. Terrible outcome IMO.

No idea why Kassian is suspended though.

Could it be because you can't continue to rain down blows on an opponent who is not engaging in a fight? Taken from the DOPes statement:

“Kassian grabs Tkachuk by the collar, takes him down to the ice and throws a series of forceful punches to the head of a player who is an unwilling combatant. This is a violation of rule 46.2 where a player is the aggressor. He continues to throw punches to inflict punishment on a player who is in a defenceless position or is an unwilling combatant.

“At no point does Tkachuk have an opportunity to square up or drop his gloves, do anything but protect himself. Kassian acknowledges he was seeking retribution for this hit and several others in the game. We acknowledge his frustration but players can’t grossly violate league rules from legal hits or otherwise.”

I can understand Kassian's frustration and anger for retribution, but in my opinion he certainly crossed the line. Another thing that hasn't been discussed much is Kassian rips Tkachuk's helmet off before violently throwing him down to the ice. If he lands face first or head first, it could have been serious trouble for Tkachuk.

Could be, could be.

I tend to agree with your comments. i do not like the League protecting "unwilling combatants" though when said combatant has played very physically, picking and choosing their spots to be "willing".

If Kassian loses it on Gaudreau (and his 10 PiMs this year), then yeah, throw the book at him. I just see this incident as not quite the same scenario.

This could be my Flames bias talking, but I didn't really see a chance for Tkachuk to square off and engage honestly in that scrap with Kassian. I mean Kassian is behind Tkachuk, rips off his helmet, grabs him by the collar and tosses him to the ice and then proceeds to rain down punches. Tkachuk does get back up and I suppose you could call it turtling at that point (I would say covering up) as Kassian continues to throw punches.

As I posted in the other thread, this is what Tkachuk needs to do with Kassian.

Admit it, you just like the announcer in the clip saying "high-octane Calgary offence"

He should just get it over with first shift, but he won't. He will try to taunt Kassian to do something stupid..

Q: What guidance are you giving Matthew Tkachuk right now?
BT (praphrasing) We're telling him to keep it up

Basically, Tkachuk is a power forward and a good pest. BT feels he didn't cross the line (yet) and they want him to keep contributing what he always has.

Gonna need to watch that next one.
