I think it could help level the playing field in talen if applied properly. Great players may be drawn to schools where they can start earlier and be a big star rather than going to the school that has multiple 5 stars and championships.

I am sure that Nick Saban hates this.

You hit the proverbial nail on the head about leveling the playing field...now its all about how it gets monitored...BTW I think its the right thing to do..I have always been a total advocate...The money that the Video Game, Networks and Apparel companies make let alone the conferences pales in comparisons to these kids putting there bodies on the field each week and we think a free education should suffice...maybe back in the day when it wasn't such a money grab I would have believed that but not in today multi billion dollar world of College sports

I bet Tom Herman and Texas will have a bigger and more lawn cutting businesses to lure recruits. My guess is that someone like TJ Simmons would do better at WVU. At Alabama he never saw the field, at WVU, he is the starter and one of the leaders of the team. I am sure that WVU booster advertisers will be able to outbid Alabama for their second string talent who would be starters at WVU.

As I have thought about it, I think that the NCAA should pass a rule with this type of provision.

1. All advertising contracts and payments must go through a school selected agent who is compensated through commission and responsible for enforcing the rules, paying and taxing the athletes. Athletes can have their own agents who must channel all payments through the school selected agent. A school itself cannot be the agent or payment clearinghouse without being considered an employer who must pay taxes.

2. Caps on current income ie $50K per year with the balance put into an escrow account that is given to the player upon leaving the team no sooner than 4 years after signing the scholarship. This will prevent the millionaire student athlete and give some incentive to stay in school.

3. Allow the NCAA to contract with large companies and spread the wealth to all athletes equally through the school selected agents. School agents could also have this power. Companies like EA Sports, Nike, tv networks and large sporting goods retailers are good candidates to get large sums of money that can be spread around to all student athletes.

4. Spread the wealth- encourage the school selected agents to enter into agreements that include an entire team rather than individual players and spread the payments equally among all of the players. Restrict individuals from using team jerseys or logos unless the entire team is included. Kids on the crew and volleyball teams make the same sacrifices and should not be left out when the cash is passed around.

College football is a billion dollar a year industry. It is fair to allow players to get a portion of this pie. By allowing advertisers to supplement students, the school should not bear additional expense or become actual employers. Putting a system together will be tricky but not impossible. The big challenge will be to not help a few (schools and athletes alike) without helping the many. I would hate to see the QB get a million but the punter get nothing out of this deal. Equally challenging will be to keep the schools in big marketing areas such as Texas and USC from dominating the dollars.

I don't know...there is going to be boundary's...I have no Idea what they will be, but my guess it will start with wherever their likenesses, names or jersey numbers are being used they will get paid a royalty...which IMHO they should..especially the video game market. It will be interesting if the schools permit them doing local or national commercials...that's when it gets dicey....

Love the foresight..but here is devils advocate..

1. The first I don't think could happen..they file with an Agent they lose their amateur status...I am sure this is what the NCAA is now trying to re-define

2. I like the idea in #2 but this whole transfer portal has corrupted this idea already.

3. The Third item is what this is all about brother! But they are keeping it all!

4. Not sure I am with you on this one...The punter, kicker and the scout team dudes are taking a lot less hits than the first team guys....not sure that's equal pay for equal pain..that goes for the other Olympic sports that aren't selling thier bodies out...

A fair point, but it won’t just be us going after alabama’s Second stringers. There will be others with bigger pockets that pursue these kids because they can. All these big boosters at big schools that live and die by their football team are loving this. This is a terrible rule. It will invite more shady people into college football, divide lockerooms, promote the “me” attitude.

This is bad.

I have a feeling that this is going to end up being more for the NCAA to profit. The NCAA will be the ones to sell "officially licensed product" that the kids get a small slice of. They will likely have to agree to their likeness being used by the NCAA before ever stepping on the field. I don't see them letting a star gain from their stardom. Yes, I'm a pessimist. So if the kids get any money out of this it's a pleasant surprise.

Here in Michigan we have a bill proposed earlier this week that seemingly would be just like California.

Assume many more will follow.
