Outside of the shoulder, did he have any other serious injuries?

Since others mentioned that possible muscle calcifying thing, the only other serious one I can think of is a couple years back when he broke his ribs and it lacerated his kidney (? maybe on of his other organs). Those were the major ones that caused him to miss time. He played hurt a lot though
