Active (minimum 100 career wins):

1. Chris Petersen: In 14 years at Boise State and Washington, Petersen has 133 victories, good for a winning percentage of .808 that is easily the highest of any active coach with more than 25 victories. He went undefeated twice at Boise State and has reached the playoff at Washington, something he’d probably have done a time or two with the Broncos had the playoff existed then.

Hard to argue with that list...

4. Kyle Whittingham: Utah is a Power 5 program, though it would be interesting to see what Whittingham could do if given the reins at a school like USC or Oklahoma. As is, he’s won 120 games in 15 years with the Utes, including a memorable 2008 season that ended 13-0 with a stunning victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Doubt he ever gets one, but Leach is still one funny SOB.

I had Pat Dye at my business in Mississippi in '94, when most of the SEC coaches were under contract with Great Southern(Yellow Wood) we were also doing a live radio broadcast, just as we walked outside, the radio gal stuck a microphone in his face...only to catch Pat Dye saying ...."Man, it's hot as a fuck out here." before he saw the mic...ah, live radio...good times.

In Pat's defense, it was Southern Mississippi in July, he might have understated how hot it was.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Kyle Whittingham is really that impressive? He went 13-0 one season, cool. That was 11 years ago and he was in the Mountain West Conference.

Brian Kelly had a 12-0 final record in 2009 at a Big East school (Cincinnati). He also has seven 10+ win seasons (3 of last 4 seasons), Finished Top 5 three different times. Kyle Whittingham finished Top 5 once going 13-0 at a mid-major.

I was going to bring up Chip Kelly, but he doesn't have 100 wins in his 5 seasons.

So, I will bring up Kirk Ferentz. He has five 10-win seasons (at a P5 team), been Top 20 AP 6x, had a 12-0 season with a P5 team, has 5 seasons < .500 (Whittingham has 4 seasons < .500 with 6 less seasons, 11 less with P5 team).

I also think Patterson should be above Peterson, as he has gotten closer to the NCG at a P5 school.

1. Yes, you are the only one. I think a lot of it goes to the perception you have of Utah. Prior to Wittingham, Utah only had a handful of decent seasons.... now they are a P5 team and one that many people expect to contend for the conference title. That is a big deal. He took them from G5 to P5 and responded really well against programs that are well established in P5.

2. Depends on how you want to look at Cincy. Was it Kelly that did the heavy lifting or was it D'Antonio? d'Antonio at least had them going in the right direction before he left. Kelly kept it going. Then Kelly took over a storied program with tons of talent... and he has under performed according to many, especially when considering their schedules (I don't think very highly of ND schedules, some are tough, but not too many in my opinion). If I remember correctly, ND had a bunch of things just happen to go their way in 2012 which helped them go undefeated.... then got dominated by Bama.

3. Patterson has gotten closer than Peterson? You do realize that Peterson was in the playoff right? Patterson has NOT gotten closer than Peterson.

Some forget that Utah was the only undefeated team in '08, and is the only non AQ/G5 team to ever be ranked #2, only because of SOS. Going from MWC to P12 was a huge step. @AlaskaGuy posted a tweet in the PAC 12 thread about how many 4-5 stars USC recruited vs Utah and then compared it to how may were drafted...

I don't know about that. Pretty sure TCU in 2010 was ranked #2.

List of Utah Utes in the NFL Draft - Wikipedia <--- Whittingham's recruiting classes have never broken into the top 20 and in fact are usually ranked in the top 40's yet him and his staff have managed to put a fvckload of players into the NFL.

Was it Wittingham who did the heavy lifting or was it Urban Meyer? Pretty sure Wittingham walked into a program that was 22-2 the previous two years.
