I like it as is and don't see a need to change. However, this wouldn't be the end of the world either. There's logic to it.

no thanks. that would give a potential WC team that happened to have 2 really bad teams in its' division an unfair advantage over a team that had won a really tough division. Last year, the Chargers went 4-0 against Denver and Oakland. If one of those teams had been more competitive, they would have only won 10 or 11 games.

Denver beat the Chargers last year

Division winners should be rewarded.
I totally agree. They should be rewarded....with a playoff spot.

Of the 17 playoff seasons since they went to 8 divisions: there has been 10 teams win 10+ games and miss the playoffs. That's not exactly a trend, but if they want to add a 7th playoff team I'd be okay with it. A wildcard team with a better record than a division winner happens much more frequently--14 times out of 17. My priority level is for them to seed the playoff teams by W-L record first and then discuss the 7th playoff team.

Also, had they added a 3rd wildcard team when the 8 divisions were created, all would have been 8-8 or better. The only losing records in the playoffs have come from two division winners.

I think I can see the issue here when it comes to things like the bye week being such a huge advantage but as many have pointed out - the best teams generally win in the NFL playoffs.

There just isnt enough talent in the NFL to justify expanding the playoffs and you'd have to eliminate some teams to make each team stronger individually. Then you could have 8 teams on each side and it would still be entertaining. For the talent level currently in the NFL, the current format is as close to ideal as possible imo.

How about we realign to 4 divisions of 8 teams and each team plays exclusively home-and-homes against their division rivals in a 14-game round-robin "regular" season to determine regional seeding for a 32-team playoff tournament!

Careful. You'll raise the ire of the T-GRODs (Then Get Rid Of Divisions).:D If a team is 9-7 or 8-8 and a division winner it should have no bitch about traveling in the playoffs. It should be grateful it's in the playoffs with such a mediocre record. Case closed. This is why I tip my hat to the NBA. Do people realize the Orlando Magic (42-40) was a 7-seed (out of 8) in this year's playoffs? THEY WON THEIR DIVISION. Did anybody cry about it?

If you suggesting the possibility an NFC team plays versus a AFC team before the super bowl, then congratulations you just came up with a dumber idea than the OP did.

I had a dream that the saints were playing the rams in the SB after beating the ravens last week. Apparently the top four remaining teams after the divisional round was reseeded.

Does anyone give a fuck about the NBA?

There's your answer.

Well there wouldn't be conferences if you just took the best 12.
I'm all for getting rid of the conferences, but I think that would be more feasible if they cut down the divisions to 6. The tiebreakers would be more complicated, but it would be doable. It'd take some getting used to.

2018 would look something like this:
(1)NO (13-3)
(2)LAR (13-3)
(3)KC (12-4)
(4)CHI (12-4)

(12)PIT (9-6-1) @ (5)LAC (12-4)
(11)SEA (10-6) @ (6)NE (11-5)
(10)IND (10-6) @ (7)HOU (11-5)
(9)DAL (10-6) @ (8)BAL (10-6)

How do you have a Superbowl without Conferences? This isnt Golf. There is no way they would ever do away with Conferences. All the major sports has the this side vs. that side for their Championship game/Series.
They may add or remove divisions or even rearrange them, but they will never get rid of the conferences.

I agree with it all except adding a 3rd wildcard.

Division winners get in. 4

Two best teams after that record wise from each conference get in. 2

However, I believe it should be based on conference record not overall record. All playoff teams for each conference is slotted based on conference record (tie breakers being head to head, then total points for minus points against in conference games). So while your overall record gets you into t he playoffs in those final two spots, your conference record for all teams in the playoffs is based on your conference record is what slots you.

It is not right that a division winner at 8-8 should be able to host a game against a team that was 12-4.

Now, will that 8-8 winners conference record be worse than the 12-4? Maybe the 8-8 team lost all 4 of their NFC games, but the 12-4 team won all of theirs. That means both teams were 8-4 in conference, and the 8-8 team actually holds the tie breaker with total point margin within conference games.

So now the 8-8 team is hosting the playoff game, but it is deemed more reasonable at this point, because they actually have the same conference record and own the tie breaker since neither team played each other during the year.
