Don't be surprised if Michigan is somewhat of a fan favorite here in Omaha. They haven't been here in 35 years (since 1984) and they are Big 10.

Local CWS fans aren't big on teams that are year in and year out chalks. They like Cinderella's and uncommon teams.

A couple of notes....

Nebraska beat Texas Tech in a tournament earlier in the season. So beating them is not insurmountable.
I didn't realize that Michigan had also beaten UCLA in a tournament back on March 8th. They had UCLA's #.

Other teams that could be fan favorites....

Auburn: Haven't been here in 22 years (1997).

Arkansas: Dave Van Horn has a piece of Nebraska's heart as he coached the Huskers to the CWS a few times in the early 2000's before Van Horn's Alma Mater came calling him home. The vast majority of Husker fans understand him leaving.

Florida St: 23 trips to Omaha and never won a title.
1957, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019
Mike Martin has been head coach for 17 of those years and could be a sympathy fan favorite.

I'm definitely rooting for Arky today.


I'm also hoping Auburn makes it. A very good friend of mine here in Omaha played for them back in the late 80's.

FSU has NEVER been a fan favorite in Omaha because of the football rivalry with them back in the 80's/90's.
Matter of fact there would be sounds of boo's when they'd take the field here.

The younger generation doesn't remember that so much. It depends what angle the local media takes on FSU and Martin. They could play the "He deserves it in his last year" angle.

my high school had a similar coach....would get to the state finals a lot but never could win it all. he finally got fired a couple years ago.

Yeah, I know that. Michigan went (0-3) against them in Lubbock (March 21-23).
Michigan also lost the one game they played against Okie Jr. March 10th.

My guess is some of the casual local fans will get behind Michigan simply due to the conference allegiance.

I have no issues with Arky and Van Horn and would root for Van Horn to get a title finally. There's really no true Cinderella in this field like a Stony Brook or Coastal Carolina, Michigan is probably the closest team in that regard. Outside of Arky if they make it, I'll probably being pulling for Vandy or Miss. State for no other reason than I can't cheer for a team from Florida or Texas and a hard pass on North Carolina.

Michigan has gone (2-3) against Nebraska this year and all games have been played in Nebraska.
(1-2) Regular season series in Lincoln
(1-1) Big 10 tournament in Omaha.

Nebraska beat Texas Tech back on March 1st.

My point to @Lions=TeHsUcKs was that none of that means anything in the CWS in June.

This will be Michigan's 3rd trip to Nebraska this season and they won't be playing the home team.
