2020 is the year. They are gonna sign a front line starter and stock the bullpen and definitely making at least a wild card.
All top of free agency are resigning early

I don’t believe you. History says they won’t.

Yep. Won’t be anyone left. Sox will probably overpay a second tier free agent and try to sell that on Sox fans.

Well sure they may not have a shot at a Trout/Arenado/Machado type next year. But guys like Andrus, Moustakas, Gregorius, A. Rendon, Puig, etc are there. Plus JD Martinez and Khris Davis. They need to re-sign Abreu if they want him still.

But a starter? How about Bumgarner, Wheeler, Ryu, Porcello, etc. 2019-20 MLB Free Agents

And bullpen guys are easy to find.

Obviously the smart play is to be always pessimistic. But what history are you talking about?

Perhaps in your scenario current ownership sells the team this year and new ownership signs these good players you mention? Belle is the last top free agent the Sox signed, eons ago. Also, you seem to think pessimism isn’t due considering the team’s underwhelming play and novice handling of modern free agency.

They are growing their own top level hitters (and a couple pitchers too). It's all about young talent. Then you supplement with a couple of solid pieces and go for it. Next year.

That's how the Cubs, Astros, and Phillies did it. Suck for a few years, gather prospects, then go after FAs when they are ready.

Not like they didn't try to sign Machado. And they signed other FAs plenty since Belle. As I said, you don't need a top level MVP type. You are hoping your own guys become that. You sign to fill holes. They don't need much in the lineup if the kids keep developing. They need one more starter and a pen.

Please know I’m not trying to be combative or anything, but Belle is the last top FA Reinsdorf signed. Dunn and a couple others aren’t even worthy of mentioning. Abreu had zero MLB ABs when he was signed and was essentially a shot in the dark in terms of how he’d pan out. Also, trying to sign Machado means nothing.

Why does it mean nothing? They were clearly ready to take on a ton of salary they just got outbid. And I know you're not being combative, we're just yakking.

Like I said, they don't need to sign a Machado/Trout/Belle level player. Look at the names I listed, plenty of good bats that can help, and good arms too.

I think Rendon and Martinez will definitely not make it to free agency. Gregorious (sp?), and a couple others are meh. We shall see.

Indeed. I guess I just saw what the Cubs and Astros did and the Sox finally decided to do the same thing. It can work.

I’d say the attempt to sign someone means nothing because it never materialized. A disparity of $50MM in guaranteed money isn’t even close, which is why Machado went to the baseball equivalent of no man’s land. I’ll say that it was a large offer from the Sox, and they certainly tried to do damage control, albeit it horribly with Ken Williams, trying to portray the pure pursuit as a success.

It seems the White Sox lack TWTW.

No they lack TTTW

But next year....
Watching Eloy so far, you can tell he is quite unpolished defensively in LF. Hopefully they put some time in with him in that regard.

By this time next year, I'd like to see the following never suit up for the White Sox ever again:

-Yolmer Sanchez
-Adam Engel
-Nicky Delmonico
-Dylan Covey
-Ivan Nova
-Lucas Giolito (probably no such luck on this one, though)
-Wellington Castillo
-Daniel Palka (let's be honest, he sucks)

I'm probably missing a few others.

Cordell sent down to minors. Why are they giving abs to a career utility player in leury? See what the kid can do. He’s been impressive in the small sample size he was given. Great defense and he hammered the bell the few chances he had

sanchez has been very good the the sox for the past 2 years and is a top utility player. you're ready to give him the ax after 7 games? really?? not to mention the promise of palka and giolito. and castillo? do you remember at all what sox catching has been like the past 10 years. 15 homer potential, a decent fielder and .260 hitter? all after 7 lousy games? thank god sox baseball people aren't so short-sighted.
