So Kareem Jackson, who will be turning 31 this year, gets a 3 year 11M APY.

I'm pretty sure I guessed somewhere in this hot mess that he get 6-7M APY. I wasn't even close and Jackson played outside CB, Nickel CB, Slot CB and some FS last year.

I don't believe the Coleman signing is quite the overpay when taken into consideration other signings by DB's so far at this time.

Jackson got paid for her versatility and his ability to play multiple positions at a high level. He was on the field for 93% of the Texans snaps last year and was one of their top playmakers.

Coleman was on the field for 65% of the Seahawks snaps (meaning he was only in nickel packages)

To put it in perspective — Jackson was on the field for roughly 300 more snaps than Coleman.

It could turn out to be a shrewd move by Quinn and the Lions. But everything I’ve read about Coleman is — he struggled as an edge corner (which explains getting cut by Minny and given away by NE for a 7th round pick) Seattle moves him to the NCB role and he played well.

If Detroit signed him just to fill the NCB spot — they definitely overpaid. If they see something from him that they believe he could play on the edge, then it isn’t a bad deal.

The Lions currently have spent 141,116,245 on roughly 39 players which I made a guess who stays on top 51. This doesn't include recent signings of Flowers, Coleman and James but does include Amendola signing and the eventual release of Lawson.

The rollover from 2018 was about 5.8M (from OTC) or 6.4M (from SpoTrac)

Dead money from Lang, Quin and Lawson (5.6M) pretty much wipes out the rollover from last year.

The current allotted 2019 draft cost for their nine picks is just under 9M.

The 2019 cost per week for each practice squad player is just under 8k per player per week. (10 practice squad players x 17 weeks = 1.36M for the season at minimum allotment. Last year Jake Rudock was paid 340k as a practice squad player) I'll call it 1.75M for 2019 to be on the safe side..

BQ holds back 5-6M each year for injury/replacement signings. I'll use the 6M

They've pretty much spent 157,866,245 when considering current amount spent on 39 roster players that will or should make the final cut, IR player replacement monies and practice squad players. They'll still need to add two more players for final 53 (approximately 500k each) assuming all nine draft picks make the final roster (doubt that happens).

So, they roughly have 30.5M left before adding in contracts of Flowers, Coleman, James.

N.O. RB Mark Ingram isn't going back to the Saints b/c they just signed Latavius Murray for 4 years and 14M

Za'Darius Smith gets 4 year 66M (16.5M APY) contract with Packers and the packers also sign S Adrian Amos to a 4 year 37M.

Anthony Barr negating JETS deal and returning to Minny.

Adam Schefter‏Verified account @AdamSchefter
After telling the Jets he intended to sign with them, Anthony Barr got cold feet, changed his mind and informed the Vikings that he will be returning to Minnesota, as @MikeGarafolo reported.

crazy money being spent on these FA and not just on a 25 year old Nickel CB player at 9M APY.

Draft them or sign them? How the Lions will address linebacker

Free agents
Jordan Hicks is being considered as one of the top linebacker free agents this year. He missed the majority of the 2017 season because of an Achilles injury, but he recovered nicely in 2018 posting strong numbers, 91 total tackles, five tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, while only missing five tackles all season. He recorded a career-best 81.3 run defense score through PFF, but what he is known for is his coverage ability. Since the 2015 season, his coverage grade is 92.0, the only other linebacker to record such a score is Luke Kuechly. Lions Wire’s own Matt Urben recently profiled Hicks as a free agent to keep your eye on because of his versatility, coverage ability, and fit in the Lions defense. He may get paid more than what the Lions want to hand out, but he would instantly upgrade the linebacker corps.

I wouldn't mind a player like Hicks as a signing but there doesn't appear to be any money left (TBD regarding 2019 cap hits on Flowers, Coleman and James).

The way these LB are getting paid it doesn't seem feasible.

Roster and salary cap impact of the Lions releasing Nevin Lawson

Last season, Mike Ford showed promise as a developmental outside corner, seeing at least 69-percent of defensive snaps five of the seven games he was active, starting four of those games. The upside is there for Ford but he is still learning the position in the NFL and may not yet be ready to take on an every game starting role.

In the draft, keep an eye on full QIB qualifiers Amani Oruwariye (Penn State), Justin Layne (Michigan State), David Long (Michigan), Julian Love (Notre Dame) and Isaiah Johnson (Houston) who all match the Lions athletically and schematically.

BB_72; I won't expect another FA CB signed (couldn't afford it anyway) but you should expect CB2 to still be a priority draft pick. The supposed rookie CB and M. Ford would battle it out for opposite of Slay. imo.

meh. That's how you view it. I'll look at it through a homer's lenses and shrug it off.

just for instance

Updated: Lions reach 4-year deal with CB Justin Coleman

Pelissero’s report indicates the deal will make Coleman the highest-paid nickel CB in the league. That is a subjective designation, but last year the top nickel CB contract went to T.J. Carrie, who signed with the Cleveland Browns for $31 million over 4 years with $15.5 million guaranteed.

Ravens sign Tavon Young to contract extension

Young missed all of the 2017 season with a torn ACL, but returned to play in 15 games and on over 58 percent of Baltimore’s defensive snaps as a slot corner in 2018. Young missed the playoff loss to the Chargers with a sports hernia he had surgically repaired in January and should be healthy in time for the team’s offseason program.

BB_72; I assume the Ravens are idiots also for paying a Nickel CB which was the highest amount for that position and that wasn't even a month ago.

Lions re-sign RB Zach Zenner to a 1-year deal

The Detroit Lions have announced they are re-signing running back Zach Zenner to a one-year deal. Zenner, a massive fan-favorite, will be returning to the Lions for a fifth season.

No contract details at this time.

The difference with the Browns and Ravens vs the Lions — they have QB’s on rookie pay scale contracts. So they can pay 7 or 8 million for a nickel CB, as they are saving 20+ million a year at the QB position.

Detroit has depth issues and holes to fill, which they did fill holes with their signing.

I think Coleman is a great addition. We were the worst team in the NFL against Slot WR’s last year (9.2 ypa) — Coleman was top 5 for NCB at (5.2 ypa).

Personally — I’d have rather the Lions sign an edge CB and fill the nickel role in the draft, as CB isn’t a position you want a rookie starting for you on the outside and Slay is really all we have out there right now.

I definitely didn’t call the Lions an idiot or anything like that. I just said it was a lot of money. It fills a need though.

how did a 2, 3, 4, 5 year player pan out as a boundary CB ? (Lawson). I'll take my chances on a rookie doing better this year and the next 3 years than what Lawson showed with his skillset.

I'll imagine or assume that the only two true boundary CB's that are worth a shit in this years FA, Stevie Nelson and Ronald Darby, get paid above what Kareem Jackson got and by a significant margin (Darby coming off an ACL might be a prove it deal similar to Sherman's contract last year)

What other former Pats are still FA's?

I've never felt this franchise to be more of a joke. But I think I still can.

Surprising signing seems as though MP requires his DB's to be better than just average at tackling.

I was hoping for Steven Nelson. Could have gotten him for the same money. Still, the draft is deep at CB so there will be more opportunities then at slot CB.
