I fucking wanted both of them. Yankees should never worry about salary...they’re the fucking Yankees, and now they’re going to be cheap when 2 generational talents hit the market in the mid 20s??? They did the same thing when Moncada hit the market. Young talent is hard to acquire, and if all it costs you is the thing you have more than any other team you should jump at the chance.

again, I don't mind them being out on machado... I really want harper though... really badly...

The Mets have serious concerns about McNeil's defense and they aren't sure who will play first. They might use Frazier there or even sit Frazier is he can't hit again. They're giving themselves options.
They thought enough if McNeil that they willing to walk away from the Cano/Diaz acquisition if they had to include him, so they must not be that concerned with his defense. Maybe they are gonna try him in a corner outfield spot and put Nimmo in CF.

No reason to sign Machado now when they can acquire him for a couple AA prospects in 2020 after the Phillies or White Sox realized they fucked up

Torres is only 22. Kinda young to be branding him injury prone.

Yes but he missed quite a few games last year and had Tommy John the year before that so you have to keep depth in the back of your mind.

that was my point too... BUT if they want to beat the red sox, they need all the right handed power bats as possible... But that is just one team... and I don't like strategizing vs only one team...

Right now the Yanks need more lefties. Only Hicks as a switch hitter, Gardy, who will be a part time player and Bird, who can't stay healthy are left handed bats. Now that I think about it, the Yanks would have been better off with Lowry and the Mets with LeMahieu since they need right handed hitting

idk... no power batters, i would always rather a righty than a lefty... but i agree they need a power lefty bat...

thing about lefty bats is that they generally can not hit Lefty pitchers... Righty bats HAVE to be at least decent against righty bats, otherwise they wouldn't be in baseball...

Didi is solid against lefties which is why losing him sucks. But as the Yanks stand right now, if Bird doesn't win the position the only lefty in the day to day line up will be Hicks as a switch hitter. That's not enough balance. With the short right field at Yankee stadium having a few lefties is always a good idea. Hopefully Bird surprises us.

agreed.. it is not ideal... i am just saying that if you are a 20 or less HR guy, i would rather have a righty than a lefty... even if your lineup is too righty strong....

the only problem i see is even if they do get harper, they will not be able to regularly bench any of their big righties, so they would probably be benching bird/hicks/gardner... so it wouldn't be like they increasing a lefty... they would just be increasing the quality of that lefty..

I don't see them getting Harper. I think they're pretty much done with the bigger ticket signings. I don't see them doing too much more. They have their 5 starters, Britton, Chapman, Greene, Betances and Holder in the pen. I'm probably forgetting someone in the pen. Hopefully Clint Frazier is healthy and is in the outfield rotation.

I'll miss DJ. A lot of Rox fans are pissed DJ signed for the exact same deal Colorado gave Murphy. DJ can really play any IF position and should be a nice Zobrist-type guy in the Yanks lineup. Yankee fans who are pissed the team won't sign a guy to a $300M deal, clearly don't remember how frustrating the Big Stein years were. All that money spent, stars bought...and 1 World Series to show for it. These 2-year deals on players like DJ keep the team way more flexible.

Oh please, the 2000’s taught us how much of a crap shoot the postseason was. The 96-2000 teams were fortunate to win 4 World Series and the 2001-09 teams were unfortunate to only win 1; it had nothing to do with payroll flexibility. But congratulations to Hank and Hal for getting a bigger bottom line on the team they inherited.

And, unless they deal Andujar, I think this means it's all over but the shouting for Machado in the Bronx.

Did you honestly want him anyway?

I'm torn, in all honesty. I definitely see the point a lot of Yankee fans are making-they just set a new revenue record, something like $475M for 2018, with a payroll well below $200M. It feels like we've been told for years that this was the plan-reset the luxury tax in time for the epic FA class of 2018/19. Well, now we're here, and they're not buying any of the big ticket items they indicated they would be all over.

Flip-side is I really like what they've done over the last few years through trades and the farm. Locking this guy up for 8-10 years will almost inevitably become an albatross down the road-and I can see why they're hesitant, especially if they feel good about Gregorius coming back strong after the TJ surgery.

Of course, if Gregorious is delayed, and Tulowitzki turns out to be damaged goods, well, then we are going to have a problem.

Kinda damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Yeah I can see why you would be. I mean no question he is a talent but at that price and he clearly isn't that motivated (check out his "hustle" during the World Series") and would you want that for 8-10 years at that price? I expect Tulo to have a great season, gut feeling... Andujar I am not so sure why it seems like everyone is "down" on him. Yes his defense isn't stellar but it's not like he can't field and pull a Grandal in the post season behind the plate. Plus would his chemistry or lack there of hurt the young Yanks?

So McMichael's late-90s success via homegrown talent was...luck? And Big Stein's overspending on big name free agents couldn't match those late-90s becaue of...bad luck?

If you don’t think luck plays a factor in short series then you haven’t been paying attention. From 96-2001 the Yankees were 39-11 in the postseason in games decided by 3 runs or less; that’s simply unsustainable. From 2002-07 they were 12-20. Aside from the 1998 juggernaut, the teams from 2002-07 were just as good, if not slightly better than the teams that won the World Series in the 90s.
