I agree with you guys.... Hue did get a raw deal in Cleveland. Nobody was winning with the roster he had the first two years. And it isn't necessarily his fault that he lost a game that his kicker missed 4 field goals..... BTW - Can you believe his Browns basically had the Saints beat in NO this season? That's crazy.

Anyway, I'm just skeptical of Hue as a HC. He always seems ready to throw someone under a bus.... As bad a game manager Marvin is, he always comes off as professional and most of his former players really respect him. I'm not sure that will be the same with Hue.

I agree about the HC part, though. I'm not sold on him as a H.C. overall.

But Hue is not going to be our HC. Therefore, less blame will befall him, which means less finger pointing, because we know who is ultimately responsible for this mess, well semi-responsible. Marvin.

If Marvin calling the defensive plays with Hue helping assist and manage game as an assistant, it could stay this way for a while if things go well.

I'm not holding my breath. I think Marvin has a good defensive mind, but there are some serious issues with personnel on D. I think our linebackers stink. Outside of Jackson, our corners are underperforming. I'm not convinced that we get consistent safety play. Where he might make a difference is getting more production out of a line that clearly has the talent to be productive and he also might be able to cover some of the other holes with a better scheme. But, I don't think that will transform us. We'll still get our tails kicked by good offense.

I also think Marvin is nearing the finish line. I'm not at all sure why he changed his mind and came back this year. I fully believe that he was going to step away (as reported last December) and for some reason had a change of heart. Regardless, I think having Hue back on staff allows him to do what he originally planned - Step away and give the job to Hue.

Mind as well bring back Dick LeBreau and Bob Bratkowski too. Let's go all-in with a blast-from-the-past movement before going back into extinction.

Safety help you say!? Call up Chris Crocker.

for the next 6 games, our schedule isn't that tough. Hue might get the credit for our big "turn around", just so long as Pitts. clinches by the last week.

This is what is playing out:

Marvin is simply running the defense now. Hue, as the special assistant, is taking over the day-to-day H.C. duties (without the title of course), but it frees up Marvin from running the team as a whole, focus on the defense and Hue slips easily into the role of H.C. next year when Marvin walks since he'll be doing that job mainly, anyway.

I wonder if Hue will hire Pauly G back when Gruden tires of him..... I don't think Pauly has done anything wrong out there in Oakland - I just don't think he'll be in their long term plans.

You're not winning with that defense as a Coordinator. They were not very good to begin, and then add up the losses in personnel through the start of the season by trade, release, retirement...etc...I mean...It's ugly out there.

I don't think there is a problem with personnel other than Kirkpatrick.

2015 Bengals Ranked 2nd in points allowed and 11th in yards

DE Dunlap
DT Atkins
DT Peko
DE Johnson
LB Burfict
LB Maualuga
LB Lamur
CB Jones
CB Kirkpatrick
NCB Dennard
S Nelson
S Iloka

2018 Bengals Rank 31st in Points and 32nd in Yards Allowed

DE Dunlap
DT Atkins
DT Billings
DE Johnson
LB Burfict
LB Brown
LB Vigil
CB Jackson
CB Kirkpatrick
NCB Dennard
S Bates
S Williams

Besides a couple small changes in personnel, tell me how this is not 90% scheme when the players are basically the same? Granted, some guys are aging a bit, but we know the talent is there. It is mostly scheme. How are your stars on the line going to get any sacks if the QB takes a one step drop and throws to a WR on a 3 yard slant on 3rd and 4 when the DB is playing 10 yards off the WR?

Michael Johnson isn't nearly as good as he was in 2015 and the young guys aren't at that level yet. I think the safety play was much better in 2015 and I think Burfict was much, much better. But I agree that our current D shouldn't be as bad as it is - I just don't see us standing up very well with a good offense.

Johnson is not as good. However, I think Willis and Lawson make a good combo over there.

Safety play is not as good as that year, but I think Bates is getting better and better and while he is no Reggie Nelson, he has been a very pleasant surprise.

You are indeed right about Burfict, but once again, he was hurt during preseason, and was suspended for several games to start the year. Meaning, this is his first take at this new defensive scheme. He was slow to the point of attack, he was not reading things as well. I think he has lost a decent step, but I think Austin's scheme was so poor, that Burfict was probably playing things perfect in Austin's scheme. Part of his game plan was to steal the ball instead of wrap up and tackle. Go for the ball, cause turnovers, don't wrap up. Hold the runner up, try to grab and slap at the ball as you and the runner travel 10 to 12 more yards until he either drops the ball or he goes down.

Austin's scheme was horrible. In the vanilla defense we played in the preseason, Dunlap and Atkins were shinning because we weren't playing so far off WR's.
