Twins' Miguel Sano detained after running over police officer in Dominican Republic

Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano was detained by police in the Dominican Republic after a traffic incident early Sunday morning during which Sano ran over a police officer.

Sano struck officer Argenis Emilio Gillandeux with his vehicle, leaving him with a broken leg. The officer was on duty outside the nightclub Riversay in San Pedro de Macoris, according to the police report.

Sano was driving a vehicle without license plates and did not have his ID.

"We have been made aware of the situation involving Miguel Sano in the Dominican Republic. We are still gathering facts at this point," a Twins spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports.

The Listin Diario newspaper reported that Sano was released shortly after being detained, with the promise of showing up at the police station Monday at 9 a.m.

Also according to that story, Sano has offered to pay for the police officer's medical bills.

According to a translation of the the newspaper’s story, the officer “ordered Sano to stop at a checkpoint, but he continued [and] ran over the uniformed officer, leaving him with serious damage.” The story included a photo of the officer in the hospital, his left leg in a cast.

Doesn't sound good at all, I think he'll face some sort of punishment.

Erronous reporting...

Sano won't face charges for hitting cop with truck

Sano, who was leaving a nightclub in his native San Pedro de Macoris at 3 a.m. on Sunday in the company of his wife, had been speaking to police officer Argenis Emilio Gillandeux in front of the club. After the exchange, he went to back up his white pickup truck without realizing that Gillandeux had not moved his motorcycle from behind him, a spokesman for the Dominican national police, Coronel Frank Duran Mejia, told Enrique Rojas on Monday.

He ran over a cops leg in the Dominican. Bail was probably set at two sacks of rice and $20.
