I expected them to carry 3 catchers. In a one game playoff you don't carry all 13 pitchers so you have extra bench players. If Sanchez is missing pitches or if you need to pinch run for him you can do so and not worry about it.

I expected them to carry 3 catchers. In a one game playoff you don't carry all 13 pitchers so you have extra bench players. If Sanchez is missing pitches or if you need to pinch run for him you can do so and not worry about it.

Liam Hendriks will serve as the Athletics' opener in Wednesday's Wild Card Game against the Yankees.

That's been the expectation in recent days and it's now official. Hendriks has pitched as an "opener" in eight games this season while posting a 2.08 ERA and 7/3 K/BB ratio in 8 2/3 innings. The A's don't have a traditional ace, but they have a loaded bullpen. They are going to try to roll with it to earn a trip to the ALDS.

I don't expect them to carry 3 if they move on, only for the one game playoff due to the extra spots. I was actually surprised they didn't last year but maybe they didn't have a guy they wanted to add. They carried 3 for the 2015 wild card game.

I'm sure he gave his blessing. According to all reports, he and Boone are really tight from their days in Cleveland.

Provided they advance, it will be interesting to see how he used going forward.
