Yes, it is quite difficult to keep your balance when you have giant brass balls.

Of course, the other thing is this was pretty savvy by Washington:

Orpik:
Last year of contract:
$5.5 mil cap hit
$4.5 mil salary

Buyout pays him $3 million over 2 years and this contract gives him an additional $1 mil.

Net loss of $500k salary for Orpik, gets to stay with a cup winner, and the Capitals save $4.5 mil on the cap allowing them to keep one of the best d-men on the UFA market.

I'm presuming the league is gonna take a look at moves like this and the Brassard trade during the next lockout...err...CBA negotiation.

Crazy. How can they spend $3M and not have hit count against the cap? :noidea:

Also surprised there is no rule to block a team from re-signing someone they bought out.

Definitely.

There is. But the Caps didn't buy him out. Avs did.

So the Caps don't even have to pay his buyout. Avs do.

The Caps had to give up Grubauer, a valuable asset.

Flexibility and getting out of Orpik's contract buyout was the most significant part of what the Caps got back in return for Grubauer.

What's wrong with that? It's not cheating. The Avs got their goalie of the future out of the deal

Forgot about the Avs involvement. Kind of makes sense now.

I was just answering the question of whether the Caps could re-sign someone they bought out.

You also liked @sabresfaninthesouth 's post saying they would look at fixing in the next CBA negotiation.

Why would it need to be fixed?

(Yes, I quoted the wrong post)

Once upon a time, the Maple Leafs and Lightning had a deal in place that would have sent Vincent Lecavalier to Toronto along with another asset under the condition that he would be bought out using a compliance buyout, which would was a cap-free loophole put in place following the 2012-13 lockout. Tampa Bay would have then re-signed Lecavalier to a more team-friendly contract. The trade was vetoed by the league on the grounds that it was cap circumvention.

This is literally the exact same situation, except that the Avs will have a cap hit.

The league and player's union needs to set clear rules for handling of cap shenanigans. Especially the LTIR loophole. The Flyers signed Pronger to a contract they knew he was never going to finish and that contract eventually got traded. The Flyers paid no penalty for giving out a deal that everyone knew was going to get shorted. Same basic premise with Hossa in Chicago. I would prefer that there be a 50% cap hit for using LTIR. And my team has used it on two different players.

Because it's clear cap circumvention.

The Caps signed Orpik to a contract that they began to regret (shockingly) that everyone knew from day 1 was too much for too long. The CBA doesn't allow re-negotiation of contracts, holdouts, etc., leaving buyouts as the only option. The CBA also doesn't allow trading of cap space.

But nobody would believe that they executed this trade to Colorado without an agreement - in principal at least - that the Avs would buy him out and they'd be able to re-sign him for much less money and cap hit. I don't see how it's any different than if they had just traded Grubauer to Colorado for a few million of Colorado's cap space.
