While I'd love to spend all day monitoring an offset smoker, I really don't have that time and have read that electrics are essentially a set and forget smoker. May not get the same smoke or smoke ring, but the convenience of electric while still producing good meat seems to trump it for me.

Anyone have one? What are your thoughts? Masterbuilt seems to be pretty popular.

I guess ill let you know how it goes if anyone is actually interested. Ordered the Masterbuilt 20075315 (40 in digital smoker- Amazon isn't linking properly right now) and it should be here Thursday.

Plan to preseason it Friday and then put it to use with some friends coming over Saturday night. Looking to put some ribs, burgers, and wings in it, but I'll have to check out temps and times to see if I can keep it at one temp and just stager the starting times so they'll finish for dinner. Probably asking for too much on the first time using it, so we'll see what I end up doing. Ribs are definitely going in, but can always do the burgers on the grill and wings in the oven if needed.

Let me know. My dad got one. He used to spend all day and night monitoring an old school smoker and made some amazing bbq with it. He’s since switched to an electric smoker and I haven’t been impressed with his product but I also think that’s largely because he’s gotten lazy with regards to seasoning, time, and preparation.

Will do. I know it won't be the same as a traditional smoker, but it should still come out pretty good.

Already bought the one from post 2. I looked into the pellet ones, but decided an electric fit better with my current family needs. Budget really isn't an issue.

You expected me to get past the first post?

Let us know how it works.

How do you like it?

It works. But a real smoker is better. If you want to get a good smoke flavor you still can't just walk off and forget it. Until you wrap you still need to keep adding wood chips.

Got some friends coming over for the first time since our new patios were finished a couple weeks ago. Got the smoker rolling with ribs now, and then chicken breasts, wings, and burgers added later. Along with one of our smart LED TVs in he fall, football season, here I come!

Well, I'd say the first cook was a success. Clean up wasn't too bad either. Since one of the kids had milk and soy allergies, I needed to modify the rubs I used and couldn't put butter on the ribs, but they were still really good. The wife says that I'll always have to cook chicken this way from now on and is already planning on me doing a turkey for thanksgiving.

Now it's time to meet up with the other dad for some golf and finish the rest of the beer.

How does one have left over beer?

When you switch over to Bullet bourbon and he needs to drive home with his two kids and a wife who was drinking sangria.

I looked at electric smokers last month when I decided to replace my homemade drum smoker.

I ultimately decided on a propane smoker, as it's easier to just replace a burner if it wears out than the electric stuff.

I went with the Smoke Hollow 44" smoker. This thing is massive. All of 5 feet tall, maybe more. I've used it 4 times now and absolutely love it. I can set it at 250 and know that in 3 or 4 hours is still gonna be 250.
It does require many wood chip refills on a long smoke tho. The chip pans are small. I solved that problem by getting an A-MAZE-N Pellet Smoker and running that on the bottom rack. I can get up to 12 hours of smoke from that.

Also, instead of filling the water pan with water, I put 3 red clay bricks in it instead to act as a heat sink. The jury is still out in that one. I'll know more after this weekend.

I just xan't beat the flavor from my side box smoker.

My youngest brother tried a pellet smoker for camping ( for the convenience, and the flavor is just not the same at all.

If you've never has meat from a regular smoker, you won't mind the other ones because they are still better than the grille. But, if you've had a regular smoker, it's disappointing to use anything else.

Yes, it takes time and effort the others don't, but that's why the results are better too. You get what you put into it.

It's important to get the right pellets. Many are oak with apple/hickory/cherry flavor added and use a binder agent that can cause an off flavor. The ones I use are real wood, no binders. I was really pleased with the results on the brisket last week.
