Cracks are forming in the Pac-12: Will they be patched before it's too late?

Remember when my boy Slaton tired to argue with me about the stability of the PAC 12?

Yeah... I predicted some of this shit...

  • How far behind? Pac-12 schools took in an estimated $2.5 million each from the much-maligned Pac-12 Networks. LSU has a defensive coordinator (Dave Aranda) who makes that much by himself.
  • Pac-12 schools average $30.9 million in annual revenue. The SEC is No. 1 at $41 million. That $10 million difference could be the difference in paying a top-notch coach. (Note: UCLA's Chip Kelly and Stanford's David Shaw are among the top 10 among highest-paid coaches.) "Is [that gap] going to become $20 million in the not-too-distant future?" Anderson asked.
  • Is it time to start calling it the Power Four? Now four years into the College Football Playoff era and 20 years since the Bowl Championship Series started, the Pac-12 has the Power Five's fewest total appearances (five).

Arizona schools
One or both LA schools
Washington

Colorado? :noidea:

We’d have the time zones locked down at least.

Their problem is geography. They are fairly limited to the big 12.

Which isn’t bad for say usc, UCLA, and the Arizona schools.

But what would happen to everyone else?

What??...I was right there with you...I have been saying that Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State could be swayed...and if they pushed hard enough maybe Nebraska thinks about jumping the Big 10...

I would also add that UCLA just did their own media rights deal rather than use the Pac12 one.

Perhaps because of some of the reasons mentioned here.

Georgraphy works against all of this. As much as I want to believe this could happen, my head tells me there’s no way on Gods green earth the Arizona schools would come to the B12.

I can't see the Pac going anywhere. I would like to have the Arizona schools but I just don't see any way it happens.

Do you see something coming along for the Pac 12 to improve their revenue generating power?

I'm not linked into the Pac 12, but they produced a poor model for themselves and they're falling further behind the other P5 conferences each and every year.

They be ripe for the pickens...

I would really like to be wrong. I think the Arizona schools would be better off in the Big 12 as long as there is a GOR to make sure that OU or Texas never bolt for greener pastures. They are in the MTZ but most of the other Pac schools are PTZ anyway. I don't think distance would be much more of an issue for them than it already is. The big thing would be security. They never have to worry about any of the original Pac schools ever leaving.

It's all about money. If the Big XII could milk more out of the TV deal then it could work. I don't see any PAC12 members jumping without a sizable upgrade in revenue.

WV is in the EST..........LOL! Outside of USC is there really any other school that has a Football Tradition?...UCLA and Arizona are the the only basketball schools..and they are a shell of themselves in today's world...UCLA I guess is in some kind of resuscitation mode...Stanford...THE BEST overall program probably in the country but its all Olympic Sports driven... so I guess IMHO it comes down to identity, the majority of the Television Viewing audience is Mid West and East..thats where the exposure is ...the ARIZONA schools have really nothing to lose and they bring an instate rivalry with them so they hit the ground running...something Wv has yet to to find in the conference..

WV hasn't been a great fit in the Big 12. The distance is just to far. And being in the EST is just one away from CST. That was a point I was making. The other schools in the Pac are 2 time zones away. That's a big difference. Most fans in this area don't want to stay up until midnight watching their teams when they've spent their entire lives watching games in the daytime or ending by 9 at the latest. That's why I think the Arizona schools are a possible fit even though it will never happen.

You could argue either way if they are a bad fit..maybe logistically but not culturally...would it make more sense if they played in the SEC..sure but that day ain't coming anytime soon

I like WV in the Big 12. They just haven't developed any rivalries or recruited from the other Big 12 states.
