Tasting NotesView attachment 89426 for Highland Park 30:

Overall – This is a serene dram. Creamy, dreamy – so devoid of disturbance it is like peering into the depths of a swirling, many-colored marble, buffed smoother than glass.

Color – Dark reddish brown, held in the light it turns to cherry, as transparent as gemstones.

Nose – Brandy preserved fruit, and pungent sherry, giving way to heather, oak and butterscotch creme brulee, hints of milk chocolate and ancient peat.

Splash – Ridiculously devoid of heat, it is smooth as a palace floor.

Palate – Medium to full body, expansive and deep, with oak, citrus zest, sherry and a touch of salted green peat, all so well-married that “balanced” no longer holds any meaning.

Finish – mellow and effortless, with dry wine oak and floating chocolate toffee.

Highland Park 30 review - a serene dram. Sublime. One Man's Malt

I really dislike scotch... but I love bourbon! I've tried a bunch of good ones lately. My mainstay is Maker's Mark if that gives you a point of reference. Here's a couple of "dranks" to check out:

Borough Bourbon is made right here in DC.

Breckenridge Bourbon is my new fave. So good. They make vodka as well, but I thought it was so-so. Their bourbon is yummy. It's the highest distillery in the U.S.

And in the misc. category. Cooper and Thief is a red wine aged in bourbon barrels. Not the best just for sipping. But if you want a wine with a steak, this is your dude, right here.

Stay thirsty, my friends.

I was in Edinborough towards the end of October and let me tell you, scotch prices are way better there than they are here.

So my boss broke out the

for our Christmas party. Good, but late in the evening I do not think my palate fully appreciated the subtleties of this particular bourbon.

Is it worth the hype? Or am I better off with a moderately-aged scotch?

Discovered this on my trip to Scotland back in October, not sure if it's available over here but probably tops my list.

I killed my bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask on my birthday. It has not yet been topped as my favorite scotch. Though, I'm kind of poor, so there are plenty of experiences my palate is yet to have.

I still have both Small Barrel and Single Batch Colonel E. H. Taylor among my bourbon collection, though, so I'm doing alright there.

Interesting tidbit I learned while in Scotland, there's a bit of a scotch shortage at the moment because 10 years ago they did not anticipate the whiskey boom of the past couple of years. So you'll see way more blends as they attempt to keep up with the market.

Also random, France is the biggest importer of scotch.

My favorite is Highland Park 18 yo - it's not cheap but the most well rounded I feel. I love opening up a bottle in a small room and just basking in it's aroma. I almost bought a bottle of the Highland Park 25 yo in Scotland for £299 but decided against it. I saw a bottle of it at a local store here for $575.

That is right around the price here also. Considered getting it for my Dad's birthday, but he is 82 and I was worried the excitement might cause a heart attack. That, plus he would say "I will save it for special occasions" to which I always say "Dad, if you wake up tomorrow, it is a special occasion."

OK, its not scotch, but it is booze and hockey. Nice to see the owner of the team finding new revenue streams.
