The problem is, there was a cap and that cap offered guaranteed single season money, Kirk was not going to sign an extension under any circumstance. I said it then, and NOW everyone else knows that it was as true then as it is now.

Here's a question for everyone still hanging onto the idea that Kirk would have signed an extension back then. Ready??

If you're his agent and you've done the math with regards to cap money, and, believed in your client's ability as much as the client did, why would you give up potentially 44million (possibly 78) in guarantees over two or possibly three years and/or (key part) the chance to become a extremely well paid free agent who commands top dollar?

Admit it guys, Kirk and his agent were focused on long term, they played the cap game perfectly, collected the 44 million in guaranteed money, and (key part) maintained their ability to become a prized free agent.

he did sty , in 2015 and it was killed by 396 . that is the whole point . maybe NOW he wouldnt but when bortles reached the same tipping point as KC did in 2015 the jags responded with faith . the skins responded with show me first bitch and that ultimately lefdt a bad taste in his mouth

First of all the article that you just posted said that he was "INTERESTED" in signing Kirk NOT that he wanted to do that. Second, how "interested" was SM? Well again from the first line of the article that you've just posted it reads:

"Scot McCloughan was interested in signing Kirk Cousins long term, however it was for half of what he'll be paid this season."

Translation: NOT very and a lowball offer at that , which was cursory at best. This is why it was nixed, because if not the team, then surely Kirk and his representative.

I get it you guys want to believe that SM was making a serious attempt to sign Kirk at what's become known as an extremely lowball offer. So, here's an article posted by @Sharkinva that tells a very different story than the one you guys are pushing.(A fair offer to Kirk by SM)

Report: McCloughan wanted to offer Cousins extension in 2015

The first line from that article reads as follows:

"Scot McCloughan was interested in signing Kirk Cousins long term, however it was for half of what he'll be paid this season."

Translation: NOT very and a lowball offer at that , which was cursory at best. This is why it was nixed, because if not the team, then surely Kirk and his representative.

If I'm not mistaken @Stymietee was some kind of Doctor at one point. This would explain the precision hair splitting he is attempting.

yeah, but sign him to what? clearly not anything close to what Kirk and his people would have accepted. There are many articles making THAT point.

And you think that deal was equal or that much better than the one that we offered before the first tag?? To my knowledge, you can’t sign a player during the season, so that’s all it was..talk over a beer between GM and agent. I understand your premise that it shows some commitment to Kirk long term, but you can’t deny that it probably doesn’t change things. Either his 3 year contract is about to end, and he still wants to get paid huge $$$ at the end of it. OR he is playing two more years on a well below average contract (wrt his stats) and wants a extension NOW before his window of opportunity closes.

Except you can sign your own players during the season. Other than that key piece of information, which makes the rest of your thought moot, the rest of it is actually worthless.

2014, KC was benched for McCoy.

2015, KC won the starting job and played decently in the first half of the season which led to SM wanting to extend him at that point. Bruce Allen vetoed it and KC lit it up the second half of the season and was arguably the best QB in football for the second half of that season.

Now the tag comes into play. Sorry BA, you don’t get the cheap deal when I just smoked the league. Go ahead and tag me if you don’t want to pay me the going rate. BA did tag him.

2016, KC sets every Redskin record known to man. So BA offers him the bullshit deal of the previous offseason.

There is a difference between playing hardball and being a dumb ass. BA had no leverage and it blew up in his face.

One fuck up leads to another known as the Alex Smith trade.

How do you figure he can win 7 and be better? We won 7 this last season with all the injuries and having gotten rid of two 1k receivers with no run game. If he doesn’t win 12games, he isn’t better unless the surrounding team is the same.

Sometimes I wonder who's getting amnesia, even if the offer came before or after the 2015 season began, playing well meant that the 20 million cap number for the following season was already being seen as the base for Kirk, by he and his agent. There's just NO WAY Kirk with his agents blessing signs for 12 million that SM wanted to offer. Again some here want to look at the moment, Kirk and his agent were looking forward. You can believe it or not, Kirk just wasn't going to sign any deal in the 2014 off season nor during the 2015 season. Unless you honestly believe that Kirk was as stupid as Bruce Allen was then I see your point.

Scot McCloughan was interested in signing Kirk Cousins long term, however it was for half of what he'll be paid this season.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the Washington Redskins former general manager was ready to offer Cousins a long-term contract worth $12 million per year, however became "uncomfortable" as his price approached and then exceeded the $20 million mark. Per Cole, no contract offer was ever extended prior to his departure from the franchise.

Fair enough. But I don’t think there was a valiant attempt at either party wanting a deal in the middle of the ‘15 season. That’s my point. As far as worthless goes, Kirk started playing well that year. His head started to swell.. and quickly. Offer or no offer during the ‘15 season, his agent pretty well said, we ain’t talking until after the season, so any efforts to talk to KC prior to that point were... well....worthless

Reports at the time were.. the GM wanted to extend Cousins. Also that Cousins would likely have at least considered if not out right signed the contract.

Remember in 2015 Kirk was making a tad over $2M for the season. Being signed to make $12M a season or six times his salary would have been nothing to slouch aat.

Any possible contract talks were nixed by Bruce for the express reason that he felt they MIGHT still want Bob around and signing Cousins would sour THAT relationship.

This is true, it's a fact, no doubt about it and a real solid offer......IF......after beginning to play well the cost went up to whatever the Tag amount happened to be.

Last time I looked 20million was greater than 12million.

True... But $20M wasnt on the table until well after Bruce nixed even talking about $12M which I suspect at the time Kirk would have signed or atleast considered.

Bruce was like a guy at an auction with two card numbers... Bidding against himself and expecting to get a deal.

I agree, however that ONLY accounts for SM and Bruce's POV. Pretty sure that Kirk and his reps had no interest in that from their perspective. You guys were right, he bet on himself and won. That never would have happened if Kirk and his agent didn't believe in his ability to play well. Playing well meant no to 12 million and hello 20 million at minimum.
