The New York Post's Brian Costello was told the Jets could offer Kirk Cousins $60 million in the first year of his contract.

New York is reportedly "willing to pay whatever it takes" to land Cousins, so this does not come as a surprise. It also makes some sense for the Jets, who have the cap space to both front-load the contract and make moves to improve the rest of the roster. The Broncos, Vikings, and Cardinals are also teams to watch in the Cousins sweepstakes.

I find it funny that some of you guys thought KC was going to sign back with us. 60m in the first year. Im changing my prediction from the Browns to the Jets on where KC lands.

Wow a report with no details.

60 million in the first season could be a six year deal with a 40 million dollar signing bonus and a 20 million dollar salary making the cap hit 26 million.

not at all. just proving the money he is going to get on the open market. You still think its only going to be a "few million" difference from Alex Smith?

Smith is getting a total of $111, Cousins will get $150M tops. Possibly less. I think that Smith at 4 years older and coming from a different system is being highly over rated. I think that MONEY is being used as the excuse for not keeping a player the front office didnt really want to keep. At the end of the day, I think this will be another of those moves that the Redskins look back on and try to defend but many will say.. .typical Redskins move... as in failure.

lol. The Redskins could not afford what the Jets are going to do in Year 1 for KC. Yes, money is a big reason why he is leaving. The difference in year 1 and 2 could be 10M per season all said an done.

Can't view the move as a failure when they had no option THIS YEAR but to let him walk. You can make the argument after the 2015 season but im talking about right now. Allen is going to look good by making this move b/c Smiths' production or win total should be as good or better than KC. At the end of the day that is what its all about.

The only way this becomes a bad move is if KC becomes Rodgers like esk and takes his new team to multiple Super Bowls.

I guess we will see once the contract numbers for both come out.

And no YOU cant view the Smith trade as any sort of failure or possible failure. Because for the last two years you have been pounding the table that we needed to move on from Cousins. I actually dont think this the outcome you wanted. But you cant back down now and say.. well maybe they did make a mistake. So you get to ride that train to the end of the line because its what you wanted, just not how you wanted it.

No matter how much Kirk Cousins gets, as long as it's over 30 million the popular spin right now is that...that much and above makes that jackass Bruce look smart. What is it about this guy that even a major screw ups turns out OK for him?

BTW: A question for you guys (and Lady) What your take on the NYJets claim to "do whatever it takes to land Cousins? Smart or Naw?

I would say as long as its over $25M the sheeple will eat it up. Bruce set this narrative in motion.

BUt I will also say the only way Bruce comes out of this one unscathed is if Cousins fails AND Smith leads us deep into the playoffs. If we saved $10M but ended up 6-10, the only people who will be calling that a win are the sheeple.

Yeah maybe you're right, but, I gotta tell you, once I heard that the Jets were going to offer 60 million in his first year, I spent a good part of this day watching and listening to a lot of talking heads on this. Based on that alone the spin looks like it's going to be quite commonly recited.

For the record anything that comes close to making Bruce look good, I'm against it!!

When is the last time Cerrato actually rewarded one of our own players. Smith is the Cerrato approach. Go out and sign some one who did well some place else.

The Devil is in the details. What if that $60M is all signing bonus. Sounds marvy, but in reality $60M over 5 years prorated is $12M a year against the cap. So as i said, I will reserve saying what a genius Bruce is until I see the Smith contract numbers, and I will equally watch Dean freak out as the Cousins numbers come out as I dont think its going to be nearly as soul crushing as he hopes.

Thats the thing, if you drive some one away, you cant then turn around and say I lost them. Bruce didnt want Kirk, they got Smith because he was the sexiest option that didnt require a trade up in the draft. If we were picking in the top 5-7, Smith would not have been traded for.

To be honest, I don't give a flat damn about the numbers, the only related concern is that they potentially could make Bruce Allen look smart, which then helps cement his time here.

Even if his "Tag" scheme worked in our favor, a minor miracle indeed, my initial reaction would be WOW!! nice move, followed by but that ass has still got to go! He reminds me of Ernie Grundfield, who consistently fucks up then does something to correct the screw up, and looks for praise for fixing it. Enough of this dude!

It's both imo. On the one hand, it's not smart to say they'd do anything to land him, but on the other hand it could help them by knocking out some of the other teams that can't afford to pay (or structure the deal) like they can.
