And George Brett. Especially with Gossage on the mound.

Wha?!
I LOVED when he was up to the plate!! It's all the other MFers that were scurrred!
2558 walks. 688 intentional walks. I think even God was afraid of Barry Bonds. It takes a lot more than roids to make a player that dangerous and that dominant.

with a runner on in the 9th?

This isn't a thread to count down the best hitters who've played since you started watching baseball, that's been done. I'm wondering, since you've started watching, who's one guy who has come to the plate in the past and hurt your team late, and who you never wanted to see again in the same situation?

Because of the nature of the question, it will almost always be a guy who played a significant part of his career in your team's division, or at least league. For example, Mike Trout has been the best hitter in baseball since 2012, but I wouldn't even consider picking him, since he's probably played ~6 games against the Phillies (though he did hit a homer against us I think this past year- bastard).

So, to conclude, the parameters are
  • Ability to perform in the "clutch" (the dreaded c-word!)
  • Has hurt your team a lot before
  • His team plays a lot against your team

When I was just a kid in the 70's and early 80's it was Jim Rice and George Brett.

In the 90's it was Edgar Martinez although we ended up getting the better of the Mariners after 1995.

After that it was Papi.

Wow, I forgot all about Brett. Might have to remove Jim Rice for the 70's and 80's and replace him with Brett. I think I mentally blocked Brett's at bats out of my memory

I think Ryan Howard is probably the contemporary player who has done the best against the Cardinals until you start factoring in the playoffs in which case its just "why are you still pitching to him" with David Ortiz. Beltran was also a real issue for the Cardinals until he wasn't.

Pitchers always gave me that 'oh crap' feeling more than hitters for the most part.

Gunnar Buhner?

God his dad was a weird dude
At least he's not that other Yankee from the era with a buzz cut who was a huge Bible-thumper and then it turned out that he likes to finger 14 year old high school girls as part of his job as a "masseuse."

Embarrassingly, as a Met fan this list is not only long, but most of the guys on it are otherwise worthless scrubs when not facing Mets pitching.

But the poster boy was Pat Burrell

The Phillies are the opposite. Our pitchers will suck against good hitters, and do well against bad ones. But our lineup over the years has been liable to make Oliver Perez look like Tom Glavine for 8 innings.

Blade! Seattle's finest.

I went on there 1 day last week, tried to get back on the next day, and was blocked. Thought it was a pretty rude welcome back. Sniff.
