App. St. committee recommends 1-A move
Back in May, Appalachian State announced that a feasibility study into a move from the 1-AA (FCS) level to 1-A (FBS) would continue and that no recommendation would be made for a step up in competition for the football program.
Three months later, it appears the school has shifted gears and is set to take a big step toward a move to the next level.
Citing a source inside ASU’s athletic department, the Winston-Salem Journal is reporting that the feasibility study committee is expected to make a recommendation for moving to 1-A to chancellor Ken Peacock. A vote via a conference call was expected to take place Monday; a subsequent report from the paper stated that the expected had occurred and the committee voted in favor of pursuing a spot at the 1-A level.
With favorable vote on a move now in hand, Peacock will now study the recommendation and send it to the school’s board of trustees if he agrees with the initiative.
There are two issues that remain unclear if a move to 1-A is approved. One, exactly when the Mountaineers would begin play at their new level and, two, what conference they would join. As ASU is located in North Carolina, Conference USA would seem to be a logical option based on geography, although the Sun Belt might be the better fit.
