Quail Hollow looks like courses I play out in Colo...nice!

I could see that quickly becoming my favorite course as well.

Apalachee does not have the greatest website for pics of the course.

You have some game brother!

I'm playing every weekend and 80-88 is about where I end up. To be honest I would be happy with 84-86 on most days on our home course. It's just tough. It has holes where you can score, but it's got 6 holes where dbl or worse is fairly easy...1,4,5,10,14,18....Trophy Club Apalachee

I don't like the layout at all, but it's close to house, my buds seem to like it, and the membership deal is hard to beat.

This week we're playing one of my favorites...the GA Club....this is a nice track, a lot longer than my home course, but more open...you're trying to avoid bunkers off the tee...not hazards and OB.
80's are typically where I'm at year in & year out. Don't play enough to refine my game to get down into the 70's. Definitely would love to some day, but realistically it may be a while before I get the time to be able to do it.

Sounds a lot like the course I played. You can definitely get yourself into a lot of trouble, making doubles a very real possibility on over 50-60% of the course. Given my accuracy issues I was definitely giving the water hazards a wide birth!

Love the Quail Hollow course for its terrain. Not the longest in the valley as its around 6200yds from the tips. I think Falcon Crest (champ course) owns that title sitting just north of 7k yds (https://www.falconcrestgolf.com/). That's a beefy course! IIRC one of their courses has a 700+yd par 5. Christ, that took some length to get there! But Quail has the widest variety of terrain that you'll see around here. The par 4 on 18 you tee off from the top of a hill down over a pond. And some of the par 3's are over canyons. Pretty cool scenery!

Quail Hollow looks wide open compared to Apalachee....lol

In fairness like I said Apalachee has some holes you can score on...#2 is like 285, so if you can cut it, you can drive it up close and have a decent birdie putt...but stray right, OB is right on the cart path, pull it left...lateral hazard, long is another hazard.

6 is a 480 par 5...down hill, 90 deg dogleg right...just get on the landing area and you have an iron in...but creek right, OB left

8 is a driveable par 4 about 285...common theme...BUT...OB left, creek right and long.

17 is a reachable par 5...505, down hill, wide landing area, but don't miss it...OB left and right.

And these are the easy holes. It's not a course you want to take a newbie to, several forced carries. Only 3 grip it and rip it holes on the whole course.

I've broken 80 there twice in about 50 rounds. Most of the people that are not members there that I play with sometimes don't like it either. It's a course that if you're swinging it well, you can do okay, but it really punishes wayward drives, and I''m not talking about drives that are far offline.

You seem like a big hitter...I'm sure you wouldn't like it.

Yea I'd have to agree. Seems like a course that I would get myself into trouble with unless I had an experienced player to tell me where I wanted to land my shots. Quail Hollow requires you to be a lot more crafty that what it appears. A lot of hazards & OB than most courses around here.

I'm sure QH has a set of teeth as well...normally I gauge the difficulty with the slope rating...127 out there which proves it's no pushover. Apalachee is a 138 slope rating...that's really high for a course that's not very long.

Trust me, if it wasn't so close and the membership wasn't so affordable ($30 a mo, 150 range balls 7 days a week, and $16+tx tee times) I would be playing somewhere else. My regular golf buddies live even closer so we tolerate it...low medal two weeks ago was 78 in our group so it can be done...same guy shot 94 this past Sat though. It's target golf and if you miss it's hard to make bogey on some holes, much less par.

In contrast, the course we're going to Sat. The GA Club..it's difficult, 129 slope, 3,000 yds longer than Apalachee. There are trees, hazards, etc. They've thinned out the trees so you can play of them much like a tour course. Hazards...if you find one, you hit a terrible shot. But, if you hit it solid off the tee, you could play all 18 with 1 ball and fail to break 90 if the rest of your game is not on...that's my kind of course. Of course it's half hr away and $60-$80 on weekends...not sure how we got this sweet deal for $35 this week....I hope they didn't freakin aereate this week, but normally they would alert golfers.

Damn that sounds brutal! Good luck with that! You're courses sound like they have a lot more teeth than the ones around here.

Speaking of slope rating. One of the toughest courses that I've played was a course up in Pullman, WA called Palouse Ridge Golf Course. Has a slope rating of 140 from the tips. Wasn't the most scenic, nor were there a whole lot of hazards, but the entire course had ridiculous elevation changes. Some fairways were like a staircase of one tier upping the next. I remember hitting into some of those fairways and having my ball roll backwards. Pretty wild. Scorecard - Palouse Ridge Golf Club

That Palouse might be too much for me!

Apalachee is a hard course for the average weekend player. But if you have game, on a good day with your driver, you can score there because it's not long.

This course...a Palmer design out east imo is much harder....green complexes are very tough.

Cherokee Run Golf Club – Conyers,Georgia

Slope there is 143 tips.

And another one I actually like (far too long to play the tips) is even harder but both of these courses are more fair off the tee than Apalachee, you have more room to land your tee ball.

Echelon Golf Club | Alpharetta Golf Courses | Alpharetta Public Golf

Slope here is 154...actually the highest in the state I understand. Former home of GA Tech mens golf team. We play it from the blue...big boy golf no doubt....you break 90 here from the blue tee, you feel like you played some good golf.

Played crappy again but smoothed a perfect 7 iron to 4ft and made the birdie on that last hole.

Nobody can manage a birdie on the 8th hole and the money next week is going to be $145.00. I think it's fucking with everyone's head. I hit a nice 5 wood that just missed the green left. When I got over there, it was on the up slope so I shoulda gone back and got a 6 iron to roll the ball out toward the hole but I got lazy, used the wedge and came up short. Everyone's trying so hard to chip in and roll in long putts that there's a slew of bogeys!

Yeah, I'm sure guys are giving it a good run if they have even a remote chance at a 2. We have a par 3 that probably could go all year without a birdie with our group, #13.
trophyapalachee_hole13.png
Slightly uphill, fairly large green. The card says 194, but it plays anywhere from 180 to 210. If the pin is back, never take enough club to carry it that far...unless you hit moon balls, it won't hold and you will kick down the hill into the shit, probable 5.

If you're going left, you pray that bunker (7-8' deep) catches you...you can make 3, or most likely 4 from the bunker...if the bunker doesn't catch you probable 5...we see a fair amount of 6s from over there. The only bail out is short right, or right. A steep hill will kick the ball back towards the green 80% of the time...too far right it will kick right and OB is over there.

Took my boy out on the course for his 1st golf experience last Friday! Went up to Jug Mountain Ranch (Jug Mountain Ranch | Real Estate, Golf, Mountain Biking, Restaurant, and Nordic Skiing in McCall, Idaho), a course that I have played many times and have always enjoyed.

RVogFrU.jpg

Sadly I played like garbage. Shot a 90 (with a couple breakfast balls). Conditions were nearly perfect. High 80's with barely any wind (less than 2-3mph I'm guessing). Teed off around noon. More accuracy issues from driver to wedge. Ironically it was my chipping that was the strongest part of my game. Hit some nice shots but had a helluva time figuring out the correct club to hit as almost everything played 15-20yds shorter. I was sailing greens all day. Must have been that bowl of Wheaties I ate that morning! A few highlights were piping a drive 340yds, and plugging a green from 200 out with a 7 iron (still ended up 2-putting for par lol).

Had a lot of fun with the family being there. Glad that my boy won't remember how poorly I played though lol.

I'm sure you had a blast with the fam Face!

I'd love to have that same experience with my fam...of course I'd be the only one playing out of the 4 of us which would suck, but just having them out for the day would be nice...who cares what the score was!

I really enjoy my time on the course kinda away from the wife. But, I guess as I've gotten older it would be nice if she played to give us something to do together that I actually like doing. Most of the stuff we do together I do it just because.

Both my kids played golf as youngsters and they bailed...my son was actually pretty good as a 10 y/o. As a family outing, they would do that...I just need to set it up one day...you planted the seed!

Don't walk away from that idea....RUN!

Well finally! My buddy Luke made a sole birdie on number 8 last week and won $232.00. So that re-set it to $29.00 and last night, his partner won that.

I hit the ball so well last night it was silly. One great shot cost me though when I hit a perfect 5 wood right over the flag on our par 3 3rd. It flew the green though and hit a small downslope and bounced to 6 inches out of bounds. Then I slashed my provisional to a fuckin' 7.

Then I played the other 8 in one under (2 birds, 1 bogey, 5 pars) for a 38. I hit 5 greens so a good recovery but shit, what might have been :(

Man...good pay day for a birdie!

That's wicked to hit a shot that good and end up OB! Good playing still.

I'm slopping it around lately...I shouldn't say that...last 3 rounds 42-45, 44-42, 41-46...breaking 90, but just a blah game right now...I'm not one to play well in this heat and humidity down here, hard for me to stay focused. I've only had one round in the last 5 or 6 where I scored better on the back.

Played like shit yesterday, started with four 6's in a row and finished with a 47, can't remember a worse start then that. I'd like to blame a shoulder workout for the slow start, but I've done it before without those kind of results. My chipping close to the green was horrendous, must have bladed four or five across the green, instead of putting for par, I'm trying to salvage bogies and double bogies.

Played a little better, shot an 85, but missed a lot of opportunities to go lower.

Wife still beat me by three strokes, she shot an 82, first time under 90 for her....she played a great game.

Guess who wants to play again...after shooting a 41 on Friday over nine holes and an 82 yesterday, I can't say I blame her.
