IF Fed or Novak lose will the this be the first time that only 1 of the 4 made the semis at a slam in like 5 or so years?? I think that is right. Man that is crazy.

Plus, Halep played in that same FO Finals as Sharapova, but she's still playing great.

There have been other cases of FO Finalists doing well at Wimbledon, getting to the Wimbledon Finals or so. It's not like the FO champion necessarily played more grueling than the FO Finalist, and in some cases, the FO Finalist might have done more running, leading to an easier time for the FO Champion.

I generally think though that these athletes recover well. They're can handle two a days at smaller tourneys, or the split day SFs at the AO and still win, etc.

There's been a lot of negativity surrounding the American performance but lost in the shuffle is that eight (!) of the final 16 in Boys Singles are Americans. This is the best group of juniors we've had in at least 20 years, and there is enough depth that even if a couple flameout, there are likely some top 25 players there. We'll have to go through another 3-5 years of hopelessness, but there are better days ahead.

Being good in Juniors doesn't necessarily translate into shining as a pro for American players. Look at Donald Young. You may see a couple of John Isners in that top twenty five bunch.

correct

"it's a different ballgame" is a good way to put it

and not just for americans

in the past 10 years, only 3 players (4 as of this coming monday) who have won junior grand slams on the men's side have made the top 10:

Monfils
Murray
Cilic
Dimitrov (will crack the top 10 next week when new rankings come out)

What other players who were juniors in the last ten years have reached the top 10?

Juan Martin Del Potro (Top 5 junior who made French Open Quarters where he lost to Andy Murray)
Kei Nishikori (#7 ranked junior who made the quarters at multiple slams)
Milos Raonic (The only real exception...was a late bloomer like many big servers)

Maybe I'm missing one, but either way, making deep junior slam isn't a bad thing. It doesn't guarantee success, but it is heavily correlated with success.

it's exceedingly rare for top 10 juniors to make even the top 50 on the atp

here are the year-end top 10 junior players from 2004-2011. i figure that it's too early to tell for most of the guys who were playing juniors between 2012-present.

junior rankings are heavily contingent on performance at the junior majors.

i guess "heavily correlated" is relative...for some people.

All of the boldeds were top ten talents of their birth years. Some of them did not mentally materalize, and I'm not gonna look at age each individual rank to see if they reached the top ten. I still think that's a pretty strong correlation, and I would much rather have several Americans on the list than none.

I honestly have no idea who's playing. I do know that Kerber & Halep are in the semis.

Women's Tennis will be in trouble when Serena leaves.

The Cilic match wasn't that great. The 3 sets he lost, were uncompetitive. I don't think this was a breakthrough.

Wawrinka played great the 1st two sets, his power was there. 4th set was boring. He lost his power for some reason, both on serve and his ground strokes.

A bad stat for FED was how he won 0% of Wawrinka's 1st serve points, in the 1st set.

Raonic-Krygios: It went into tiebreaks, but this was just an ok match. A lot of out-of-position errors. Raonic won in 4.

Two Women's SFs today, Safarova-Kvitova and Bouchard-Halep.

Bouchard-Halep is the one to watch, to see new players who are good and will be a fixture in the game.

Bouchard has been to the SFs of both majors. Halep QF of AO, Finals of FO.

I like Halep more, like her angles on her shot-making. Halep in 2.

Eugenie all the way, semis of every major this year. Halep sort of funny looking...

Most definitely recording both semis but will focus on that one.

Raonic in tough against Roger.

Would love to see Dimitrov beat Serby.

I kept thinking during the Cilic-Serby match how Serby's mom would probably want to ethnically cleanse his opponent the Croat Cilic.... She's a severe looking lady....

You proved that by saying Kerber is in the semis...

I'm a big Serena fan but somebody always comes along. It's the way of the world.

The Bouchard - Halep match was ok. Bouchard made a lot of backhand errors in the 1st.

Halep's level dipped too much to start the 2nd.

Bouchard won in 2.

There is going to be an American champion in Boys Singles. Stefan Kozlov picked up a great win over Johan Sebastian Tatlot of France in one semi. On the other side, American Noah Rubin's about to finish off fellow American Taylor Fritz.

Kozlov, of course, is considered an elite junior who is the next great American hope. Rubin is John McEnroe's pupil. At one point, he was considered the next big thing in American tennis, with heavy hype from McEnroe. He's cooled off over the last couple years (although he has some solid pro results), and has been going back and forth on whether he was going to college or pro. Kozlov winning would probably be better for American tennis. The media needs a guy to latch on to, and he obviously has the game for it.
