Will Peppers go down as a top 10 defensive player of all time when he decides to hang em up? Considering he is athletic enough and could play until he is 40 and can still produce big seasons. He's also imo along with Ray Lewis the most dominant defensive player of this generation, more so than guys like DeMarcus Ware, Jared Allen, Michael Strahan, Jason Taylor, Dwight Freeney, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, Darrelle Revis, Charles Woodson, Brian Urlacher, Patrick Willis, Warren Sapp, etc.

My top 10 defensive players of all time, with Peppers getting consideration to crack the list once he finishes his career and adds to his already HOF resume.

1. Reggie White
2. Lawrence Taylor
3. Dick Butkus
4. Rod Woodson
5. Joe Greene
6. Ray Lewis
7. Deacon Jones
8. Ronnie Lott
9. Alan Page
10. Bruce Smith

maybe body of work, not in a bears uniform

Peppers only played 4 seasons in Chicago, Urlacher spent his entire career....not really a fair comparison in the first place. He had some great years as a Bear still in his short stint.

Overall though, Peppers is a much better overall player than Urlacher.

He still isn't a top 10 defensive player in my book, even as great as he is.

I don't know... he was one of the best of this generation. That's for sure.

Football is the toughest sport to run comparisons across multiple decades

Yes he is and I don't think it is close tbh
Last time I saw Urlacher, he was the victim of a hit and run.....They never got the plates of the Bus......

these conversations are never cut and dry ... too many variables involved .... what era did each play in? .... what systems did each play in? ... what role(s) were they asked to play for their teams?

there is no true black or white answer

Exactly. Not to mention, with guys like Urlacher/Singletary... I just don't think it is fair to Peppers nor them to really compare them head-to-head as players. What Urlacher and Singletary both brought to the game as basically QB's of their respective dominant defense's cannot be understated either. Both were great leaders, with high IQ's and in total command out there. However, again... it's not fair to Peppers to fault him for that as it was not his job and I think he impacted the game in ways that those two did not as well.

I just know that in 2010 and 2011 when Urlacher/Peppers were both still in their prime together on the same unit - it was really exciting as a fan when they would get on a roll. Two absurdly gifted athletes.
