Why is Ichiro considered automatic for HOF?

They are, but the defensive metrics rate Ichiro as a good defender for his career....he's got a +117 career FRAA for starters, and that's with him being mediocre the past few years.
Great he's Jason Heyward who could slap singles. HOF is deserved!

I know he's getting in but, again, and last time, I don't think he should...

Party on!

He never played in a World Series? Not really his fault is it?

Junior Griffey, Frank Thomas, Rod Carew never played in a World Series.

using OPS+ for a singles hitter is never gonna make him look good.

Al Simmons? He is in... Edmonds didn't even get to 2,000 hits.

He still has a .311 Avg even with hanging around to long to get 3,000 so the guy didn't take a walk no reason to ignore the other things he did.

Ozzie was a slam dunk HOFer and hit .262 and his OBP is .337
Ted Simmons. 311 is impressive for a career BA? 355 OBP is impressive?

Edmonds was an 8 time GG CF'er...much harder than corner OF with a 900 OPS and 132 OPS+. about 50 hits shy of 2000 but slg'd 527 and a 376 OBP..and better WAR, by a point

I get it, he's getting in...just not impressed to call it HOF worthy.

I just think its the unwritten rule, 3,000 and you are in unless you bet on your team or used the juice.

3000 hits for starters. He's also a great fielder and one of the best hitters I've ever seen.

OP is trolling, or he doesn't actually watch baseball. Ichiro is one of the best players of his generation, its not all about nerd stats, offensively and defensively he made a tremendous impact from day 1, he was a terror on the basepaths as well, unreal player.

59.4 WAR

107 career OPS+

355 OBP

755 OPS

meh...

That's pretty amazing for a guy that came into the majors at 27, and keep in mind 54.7 of that WAR came in his first ten seasons. 5+ WAR per season over ten years is pretty HOF worthy IMO.

I do agree that he's not as much of a slam dunk statistically though, and he is pretty overrated as a hitter. He was a great contact hitter, but his career OBP was merely good (.355 and he only had three seasons in the top 10, only finished higher than 9th once) and he had no power. Sorry, but there's a lot more to hitting than batting average. He was an above average/good hitter, but certainly not an all-time great. His baserunning and defense are what make him a HOFer.

We get it. Your opinion is wrong. Repeating it over and over doesn't change that fact.

Ozzie played a far more difficult position where offensive was much lower than any of the outfield spots. A 107 OPS+ from a corner outfielder is pretty pedestrian. Not that an 87 OPS+ is great, but again, offense historically is much lower at SS than in right field. And like Ichiro, Ozzie was a fantastic baserunner and defender (though Ozzie might be the greatest defensive player ever).

OPS is not a good start for singles hitters

Maybe not, but the idea of comparing hitters is to measure all their contributions (batting average, walks/HBPs, power) and outside of batting average, Ichiro didn't offer much.

Not trolling. laid out my argument and backed it up. Believe he was very good...and saw him play many times, doubt you saw him even 3 times live

Pete Rose was overheard saying....

“Since they’re putting overrated slap hitters into the Hall based on accumulation, can I tag along?”

I don't think you can hold it against him considering he played for the shittiest franchise in MLB for the best part of his career. Ichiro's rookie season is the last time the Mariners even just made the playoffs.

Gold gloves are garbage...look at Hosmer. One cumulative stat...3K hits over 18 years. Pujols is about to push thru 3K, but he also has a 385 OBP and 950 OPS 600 HR's...that's HOF. Not just pretty good

Except nobody claimed he was as good as Pujols - Who could be a top two 1st baseman ever and top 7-8 hitter of all-time.

Only 31 players in the history of baseball have achieved 3,000 hits. Ichiro did so with losing 6-7 years of his prime MLB years to playing in Japan as well. Where he accumulated an additional 1,200+ hits.

Ichiro's first 10 years in the league saw him eclipse 200 hits in every season. Only him and Pete Rose have achieved this. That is HOF - not just "pretty good".

Moving on now...

Why is Alan Trammell in?

Point is Ichiro is one of the better hitters we have ever seen, singles count. Trammell never lead the league in anything. A player shouldn't be penalized for the position he played when it comes to HOF voting. There are a bunch of players not nearly as good as Ichiro already in.

Also 10 straight years 200+ hits

Ty Cobb only had 9 seasons his entire career with 200 hits.

Why are you picking on Tigers ... start on Ozzie Smith ... Ty Cobb won a Triple Crown and until recently was Donald Trump's Lawyer!!!

Late add ... Ichiro is an easy pick for the Hall of Fame!!!!

Also, it's the Baseball HOF, not the MLB HOF.
