Looking at my watch list, I noticed you got to be carefull of what your getting. Some...most are not retail versions, but OEM versions, that say you can upgrade to 10.

Well I wonder how that's going to work with this anyway as it's my understanding that the free version of windows 10 upgrade is supposed to in essence end up like an OEM anyway. MS distinguishes OEM as belonging to one specific machine and the license dies when it does while the more expensive normal licenses can be transferred, yet read some of their licenses and they still say you can't transfer them anyway. It's been controversial for some time.

My understanding is Windows 10 licenses are non-transferable except for enterprise editions. Also pirated licenses will not upgrade either. Still Microsoft's model is becoming more like Apple in that it will be subscription based for most desktop applications (i.e. Office) and modern apps bought from the MS store.

None will be on my desktop, there are too many free and open source alternatives. The first thing I'll do is shut off that stupid search assistant of Microsoft's and get a better one, same with the music app, I don't need a subscription for music. I'll just use VLC (from the the VLC web site as I have heard what is in MS store is a phone/tablet version).

I'm debating...I have Windows 7 still and never wanted Windows 8. I'd like to try it but am worried about bugs and such. Anyone?

Having lived in Microsoft's back yard since 1992, and continuously using every version of Windows since 3.1, I got this to say:

Never, ever adopt the first version of a Microsoft OS.

Wait for service pack 1 at minimum.

Well if it's only good for 1 computer then I'll be holding on to windows 7, because it's a family pack good for 3 computers.

Windows 10 will have no service packs, just rolling updates. The build soon to be released won't be the same as what is on PCs come Christmas...

It should allow each PC to update then as long as Microsoft verifies the license key for each computer.
Maybe, but I only see the upgrade icon on my desktop, not on my laptop, so.....I'm not sure of that. Haven't found any info that addresses this.

Started from scratch with another fresh install of windows 8. Updating this is taking forever. Last one had 112 updates, it cancelled 89 of them and said try again.:gaah:

Alright, fully updated and actually showing progress on the 8.1 download. Now :hope: that when it's done I can actually reserve windows 10 this time.

Even if it somehow didn't allow your other machines to upgrade, there is no reason not to take the upgrade on the one that does show the icon. Check your other machines and see if auto updates is turned off. That icon on your desktop only comes with an update check and not having that on could be why it isn't showing.

When I get done with working on this download of 8.1 and seeing if I get the icon, I'll check. Won't be much point in having windows 10 on two partitions on the same computer though. I bought this laptop February. 2010, so another 3 years, It will most likely start failing anyway. The other laptop that has 7 , is in Idaho with my ex. As for my desktop, no rush to upgrade that IMO, because I love windows 7. Now if I use windows 10 on my laptop for 8 months and love, then sure, upgrade it.

Or he could always just do a manual check for updates and it might appear...
Well yeah, that's what I meant. If you aren't on auto update then do a manual and see if it pops up.

My advice to everybody is just don't get into too big of a hurry to upgrade, and for God's sake backup everything first and make a system image backup if possible.
