I was shocked to find out that this would be Michigan State's first trip so I wanted to get a list together of teams that have not been to a BCS game. Lets start with the modern version (1998)

ACC
Duke
North Carolina
Virginia
Boston College
NC State

Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse and Miami have all been but as members of a different conference. Duke has a shot this year. Wake is the only North Carolina school that has been so far.

It'd be -

Michigan State (you're right, crazy to think that)
Indiana
Northwestern
Minnesota

I think that's it?

Appearances by SEC teams:

Florida (7)
Alabama (5)
LSU (5)
Georgia (3)
Alabama (2)
Tennessee (2)
Arkansas (1)
Texas A&M (1, as a member of the Big 12)

So I guess that leaves Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt as unrepresented.

South Carolina is probably the team that has been screwed the most in the SEC by division scheduling and the 2 team per conference limit. They've had several years where they have been a top 10-15 program but haven't sniffed the big bowls.

Can't believe teams like South Carolina, Arizona State, and Mizzou have never been. At least 2 could make it this year I guess. Even BC back when they were decent and had Matt Ryan.

ASU went to the Rose Bowl a year or so before it started, and kind of thought it was in line for an at large 5 or 6 years ago except the Rose Bowl took a 9-3 Illinois team to preserve the matchup. But yeah, there are some very respectable programs that have not made it. Hopefully we change that.

That was still one hell of a game.

Yeah, that was one of the better ones I've ever seen. Big Boy football with an absurd number of NFL guys all over the field. I bet if you looked at the guys that played in the game you'll find there were between 20 and 30 future NFL players on the field. If only we'd thrown Germaine a scholarship offer.

No doubt it about it. That ASU defense was stacked.

missouri got absolutely hosed a few years back. can't remember the exact year or circumstance, but i think it was undefeated missouri playing and defeating kansas in the last regular season game. missouri subsequently lost the CCG and kansas went to the orange bowl over missouri. made absolutely no sense.

doesn't the big 10 have a rule (or had a rule) that stated when multiple teams tied for the conference crown the rose bowl tiebreaker was the team that has gone the longest without being in the rose bowl? i always thought that was a weird way to settle it.

Yeah, they got penalized for losing another game to Oklahoma in the CCG. Kansas went on to beat the ACC champ in the orange bowl that year.

Same scenario as 2011 with Michigan and Michigan State. Both had the same record, but since MSU won the reg season matchup, they went to (and lost) the CCG, leaving them behind Michigan in the rankings and Michigan got the BCS bowl. Kansas back in 07 was what you were talking about. They played 1 game vs. a decent team (Missouri) and lost, and they got to skip playing Texas and OU that year while Mizzou had to play OU twice, and ended up losing. Hope they use that as motivation this year.
