Assuming they finish as the second worst team in the NBA, I am assuming that they get a certain number of lottery balls and they have a chance at dropping. Does any one have a solid idea on the percentage?

I don't remember the exact numbers, but if memory serves, I read that if they stay with the 2nd worst record, there's about a 52%-53% chance they keep their pick. If they drop to 3rd, then it's around 47%-48%.

NBA draft lottery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scroll down about halfway and there is a chart with the percentages for every lottery draft position.

If the Lakers stay in 2nd, the percentages are:

1st: 19.9%
2nd: 18.8%
3rd: 17.1%
4th: 31.9%
5th: 12.2%

So that's a 55.8% chance we keep the pick. 44% chance we lose it.

Yep TJF12, I have seen percentages as high as 62% to 65%. With the loss tonight against the Suns, we are still looking good.

all I know is if the Lakers lose their pick, the 6ers will be in great shape.

It would be nice to have another top 3 pick since Kobe is leaving.

Russell, Clarkson and Randle ( Mr. Double Double ) is a nice, solid young core. it would be nice to add one more piece to that trio.

It would be real nice - and in two more years - the Lakers would have a playoff team without any free agents coming on board. By the end of next season Randle and Russell will be a fantastic duo if Clarkson bolts - if Clarkson stays, then you would had a nice foursome with Randle, Russell, Clarkson and Simmons or Ingram.

Kobe went to watch Ingram and was impressed. I think the big three will stay together for awhile and if we add Simmons or Ingram, all we need is Whiteside in the middle!

I saw one report that said the Lakers want Whiteside. The Lakers don't need a Westbrook or Durant to return to the playoffs if they get Simmons or Ingram, but they do need a couple quality players that make the Lakers relevant

I think the Lakers will definitely make a run at him. The problem they have is that, he's improved so much, so fast, that the Heat are looking to be motivated to keep him and will be looking to offer him a max deal.

One thing that I think could help the Lakers cause is that I believe Miami doesn't have the cap space to offer him a max deal and will have to move some players to create space. Meanwhile, the Lakers have the cap space to take on 2 max deals. Also, the Heat don't have his Bird rights, so they can't go over the cap to keep him.

If I'm the Lakers, I show him the statues of Kareem and Shaq, the retired numbers of Kareem, Shaq and Wilt telling him "you could be next," tell him that he can work with Kareem on fine tuning his game and then drop a max deal contract in front of him.

I also tell him: "We've taken away D'Angelo Russell's smart phone and replaced it with this":

Honestly - I will be happy if they just get to keep their top three pick - it would seal the team's future with a young and quality team unless the pick turns out to be another Kwame Brown

Question:

If the Lakers get to keep their pick and end up at two or three, what would be the likelihood they would draft Jakob Poeltl? - He's a 7 foot center, has developed his game well and would give the Lakers an inside presence. I would still go with Simmons or Ingram, but a 7 foot center capable being developed wouldn't be that bad either after you get his freaking knees checked out first to be safe

He would be a reach at 3. Only two potential elite playes, Ingram or simmons. If we are at 3, trade pick.

If it's the #1 or #2 pick, you take Simmons or Ingram and don't look back. If it drops to #3, then it gets interesting. Most "experts" have Dragan Bender as the #3. Don't know much about him. I've seen Poeltl play and I like his game. He reminds me of Marc Gasol (but I don't know if he has the range Gasol does). I agree with tomodach though, he might be a little bit of a reach at #3 (experts seem to have him around #7 or #8).

If it's up to me, I probably look to trade the pick, but wouldn't be heartbroken with taking Bender if I can't get what I want for the #3 pick. It might even be better to look at trading the #3 with Denver (#7) or Raptors (#8) for their pick and another asset (maybe a player or future draft picks) and use that pick to take Poeltl where he's projected.

The site I looked at had Poetl between #3 and 7th pick, but at least I'm not that far off to be looking at him. I would say that if the Lakers are sitting at #3 and can take him, they could, but they have time to play all of them and see once they have the lottery.

He's under contract. It would likely require more than just the #3 to get him though.
