Watt doesn't deserve the MVP because he doesn't make his team better just by his presence. He's the one racking up all the stats while the other 10 players on defense are mediocre to slightly above average at best. If you had 3 or 4 other guys doing what Watt is doing because of the problems he creates for opposing offense then he could be considered the MVP, but right now when you always hear about what JJ Watt did and very rarely about anyone else in addition to Watt he's no where near the MVP race.

Thanks for the info on Sanders. One other point on him is that Denver does throw it more than the Steelers, so that's going to help his numbers. However, what's interesting is that at this point in the season, Sanders has only 4 more targets than he did last season, yet he's caught 15 more passes for 412 more yards, one more touchdown, and 3 yards more per reception. I think that really illustrates just what can happen to a receiver going from a good qb to a great one.

Not to take anything away from PM...not sure I would trade him for Ben, but he's a better QB for certain....but I think Sanders has better #1s in DEN because he gets more deep balls...whereas in PIT he was the intermediate route guy. Wallace was the deep threat and last year they didn't throw many deep balls period.

A better example imo is Bebe Thomas with Tebow, and Bebe Thomas with PM....he turned that kid into a star.

Another way to look at the case of QB vs Defensive Player.

QBs of the six teams the Texans have beaten:
RG3. Derek Carr. EJ Manuel. Jake Locker, Brian Hoyer. Zach Mettenberger.

QBs of the six teams the Texans have lost to.
Eli Manning. Tony Romo. Andrew Luck. Ben Roethlesberger, Nick Foles/Mark Sanchez. Andy Dalton.

It's a safe assumption that even the worst quarterback in the group that beat the Texans is at least as good as if not better than the best quarterback in the group that lost to the Texans.

True, but kind of the nature of the position on some level...PM does it better than others, but all good QBs make others better.

Which is probably why so many QB's win these kinds of awards.

Watt is an excellent player but I would take a great QB and below average DE over a below average QB and great DE any day of the week if all else was equal.

That's why they pick a DPOY. Football is just unique in that respect. One position, the QB, is simply far more important than any other position and way more valuable when they're a great one. Watt & Rodgers switch teams and the Texans immediately get a lot better while the Pack gets a lot worse.

I can't stand Jim Rome, but he absolutely nailed it when he said, "I think Watt is the best player, I just don't think he's the most valuable."

Yep...take Watt off the Texans and they are probably a game worse right now maybe...take PM off the Broncos and they are probably 5 games worse right now.

This is simple:

Last year Rodgers missed 8 games and the Packers record was 8 - 7 - 1

Last year Watt played the whole season and the Texans won 2 games

In all seriousness Demarco Murray should be in the discussion of MVP

If the Texans can finish strong and make the playoffs, and Watt keeps up the production, there is a definite argument for him to win MVP.

So apparently Zach Mettenberger is still all up in JJ Watt's head? :L

Hell I would take a good QB over a great DE any day of the week.

The idea of Watt as an MVP is ludicrous.

Not only is he not on a good team, he is not on a good defense. It's clear that his impact on the game is miniscule compared to that of any good QB in this league.
