As far as money, it actually probably saves them money by sitting at home. They still get their share of the pie from everyone else without forking over money for their ticket allotment and travel expenses. Not many schools finish in the black for bowl season. It's really only a reward for your team and extra practice for next year. Sure, it does help recruiting in some fashion, but probably not their biggest reason to pick a school.
I remember them losing money on the Boise bowl 6 or 7 years ago, but can't see a team losing money going to Charlotte. As far as recruiting, when I was in HS you rarely heard of a player going to Tech while if a player was staying in state they were going to UVA. Tech was never on TV in the 80s, so people didn't want to go there. The guys I played with when Tech was brought up all said no. They wanted to get some exposure.
